51. Fiona Apple - TidalHer next two albums were all about production while this her debut was all about the lyrics sung in a express both sultry and scary bigger than her body and wiser than her years vivid and honest and painful and real like nothing else I’d ever heard (I didn’t know Tori or Aimee just yet) a welcome alternative to phallocentric rock an early text for my feminist bookshelf five gold stars for my misses-education (I still don’t experience when to hold approve the wordplay). This album didn’t change my life but it did change the type of music I liked.52. Aimee Mann - MagnoliaThe best soundtrack ever to the best movie ever. The perfect marriage of music and film both of which comfort me in sickness and health with songs and scenes I’ll remember till death praying for redemption and less clunky metaphors. Am I a guy "in need of a tourniquet"?God. I wish I wrote with such grace. God. I wish my voice was so distinctive. God. I wish I were Aimee Mann. Lyrics much better than any of my words. A sound so ameliorate I can’t do it justice. A singer musician writer. to whom I owe an apology.53. Nada Surf - Let GoIn the past two years since I started my novel. I’ve written more words on this band than any other coming to terms with our buzzed-about pasts albeit through the words of my Matthew Webber stand-in. (There’s a kid who’s got it figured out!) For one-hit wonders and valedictorians the future seemed limitless in 1997. Now we’re joined in tiny clubs by dozens of travelers whose moments have passed singing and swaying along to these words: "I wanna experience what it’s like on the inside of love." If they can continue to grow so can I. Maybe I’ll let go.54. Tears For Fears - Songs From the Big ChairI did a disservice to Prince by not praising him ignoring his pop to talk about myself failing to mention the funk that angered Tipper. I also didn’t mention how much I hate the ‘80s music’s fakest and cheesiest decade which is why I’m having trouble here big-upping Tears For Fears. I love the way these guys write songs: quiet buildups hooks galore synthesizer fills that enhance instead of dominate. Again the hooks like a kindergarten coatroom. And that’s why this album transcends my eighties-phobia probably because I discovered it later thanks to a girl who made me a mixtape.55. David Bowie - Ziggy StardustI hear this album; I hate myself. Not because of its interstellar rock but because of how late I discovered David Bowie. I didn’t own this album until my mid-twenties even though I’d listened to scores of his apostles. Now. I hear traces of Bowie almost everywhere which would’ve been cool to have noticed in my youth back when I was rocking the "classics." Instead of progressing from Nirvana to Bowie. I regressed from Nirvana to bands their singer hated whose albums failed to ameliorate or challenge me. Damn the corporate-rock hegemony! I learned too late this album kicks ass.56. Beck - OdelayExcept for Beck’s music doesn’t move me. I don’t compete his albums to dwell on my emotions. Instead. I compete them because they me. They actually make me want to move. It’s weird because they’re not really dance music a genre I "hate" or "don’t understand." They’re not really move back and forth or rap or funk. Instead they’re experiments collages mashups. Also of course they’re totally ‘90s even the ones he’s made in the ‘00s. And this one album the one he’ll never top sounds like the whole of my music collection even with just a sampling of country.57. The Muppet Movie SoundtrackFor a bunch of puppets these things emote! Their voices aren’t what you’d label technically good but they carry the tunes and the weight of the world. More than just a soundtrack to one of my favorite films this album is a soundtrack to all my favorite dreams: making friends falling in love and daring to dream at all. Plus according to Webber family lore this record was the first in my now-expansive library a gift for – sigh do you really wanna hear it? – successfully going potty. Sigh. Regardless of that these songs remain magical for lovers and dreamers and you.58. Nirvana - In UteroAnother awesome soundtrack to physical exertion this album by Nirvana (again) kicks ass. Guitars are shredded. (ear)drums are punished and feelings are screamed and literally bled. We actually studied these lyrics in educate – albeit in a lesson by an eager student-teacher – not that I knew them without the helpful lyric sheet not that I know what all of them mean. I do know however the images linger the screams sound primal change surface today and the scholarly treatment hasn’t ruined my band. Another awesome soundtrack to being young and angry – or being old and mellow and feigning youth and anger.59. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IVA top-ten album when I was twelve. A top-twenty album when I was sixteen. But now that I’m the age when rockers go away to die. I don’t need this album this band in my life at least not every day after school or pretty much the whole damn weekend working out or re-reading or aimlessly driving around and around turning it up till it shakes my rearview mirror.. which doesn’t mean I hate them or never want to hear them. (I’ll never change out of playing "Stairway.") I just don’t love them as much as I used to.60. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IIAgain. I like them. Really. I do. I recognize their influence on music and my life as well as how awesome they sound when I need them. But this band’s fans have told me I suck since I’d rather spend measure with Mayer and Mraz artists who actually speak to me today. My tastes undergo been replaced along with my cells. But these two albums? Fine. They rock. A punch to the gut and a kick in the nads. The I think you are selling the music of the greatest rock band of all time a little short. Led Zeppelin's brilliant music remains enduringly powerful. That's why it still sells in the millions and a reunion concert website for tickets received over a BILLION hits in less than a week with over 25 million attempts to register. This unprecedented demand for what is in reality only 75% of the mighty Zep. For me it was like this: At 12 I couldn't stand them at 17 I gave them a serious listen from 17 to 48 they have sounded better with each passing year. Most contemporary music (even the good bands) after listening to Led Zep tend to sound weak and passionless by comparison. I'm a 48 year old sales executive and I assure you that there are millions of Zeppelin fans in my age bracket that are convinced Led Zeppelin remain in a class by themselves. Yeah I undergo to agree with you Bobby. I saw Led Zeppelin 4 times in my life. I have seen many acts over the years and absolutley NONE can come close to Zep. They have never been seriously challanged. I'm 64 years old. Wayne Vancouver BC Instead of progressing from Nirvana to Bowie. I regressed from Nirvana to bands their singer hated whose albums failed to educate or challenge me. Damn the corporate-rock hegemony! I learned too late this album kicks ass. Are you saying Kurt hated David Bowie? I think that may be wrong he covered Bowie's "Man who sold the world" on the unplugged in NY album. "Are you saying Kurt hated David Bowie?"Oh no! Not at all. I speculate that's the problem with only having 100 words with which to explain yourself. Here's how that sentence should've read:"INSTEAD of progressing from Nirvana to Bowie (which I did not do and I should have done). I regressed from Nirvana to bands their singer hated (desire STP. I anticipate and classic rock dinosaurs like Boston and Journey)."I hope that clears it up. :)Both Nirvana AND Bowie rule! Also thanks for the comments guys! How'd you even find this site? I knew I'd get some Zeppelin comments! Again that's the problem of not being able to explain yourself. I guess I didn't do a very good job with this one. Don't get me wrong. I still like Led Zeppelin very very much and of course I respect their towering influence and legacy as well as their incredible musicianship. I mean how can you not? They pretty much invented ass kicking! Of cover I know that! But remember their albums are still in my top 60 of all time and that's out of the thousands of albums that I own and the millions of albums that have ever been released. So yes they're still very very important to me. But lately I've just found myself relating to a lot of softer -- and admittedly wussier -- artists. It's where I am in life. I anticipate. 28 years old working in an office and not really rocking out too often... I'm far from being the pissed off 16 year old I used to be! Plus these newer artists can belong to me a bit more than an older artist who belongs to millions of other populate already can do if that makes sense. Basically. I'm trying to define myself with my own musical choices and not limit my self-definition to those artists who EVERYONE knows are pretty amazing. And now I'm rambling. WAY more than 100 words here! :)So. Zeppelin rules! But I like a lot of other artists too. 100 albums. 100 words. Not the "best" or "most important." Not the ones that "capture the zeitgeist." These are the albums I actually enjoy; the albums you know. I actually listen to. The all-time top-100 desert-island mixes. The ones that console me cheer me excite me. The ones that inspire me understand me move me. The ones I've loved again and again. The ones I can't imagine life without. The only ones worth the following reflections all of them containing 100 words apiece. Basically my favorite albums ever. Totally subjective? Maybe. Sure! But what's more fun than arguing music? Got some free time? Wanna write something? This "100 Words" project is open to everyone. If you desire what you see here -- or even better if you think it sucks -- I’d love to see a enumerate from you! What are your own favorite 100 albums? Films? Books? Breakfast cereals? Mustaches throughout history? The possibilities are truly infinite. Just rank your favorite whatevers (that’s the fun and easy part) describe them in EXACTLY 100 words (that’s the challenging but fun part) and post your list. Then we can trade our links – and our arguments. For more information e-mail me at.

"1-10: Abbey Road to Paul?s Boutique" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:03:41

1. Beatles - Abbey RoadWhy? Because there’s no other choice. This is my favorite work of art ever. It’s certainly the album I’ve listened to the most driving cross-country or prepping for work or writing and dreaming and seeking perfection. The prettiest melodies. The most transcendent harmonies. The goofiest lyrics. The phattest bass. George sings his best song ever. sings his best song ever. Lennon/McCartney’s a duel till “The End.” John almost freestyle raps. Paul believes he’s writing a symphony and everything crescendoes with love love love: The meaning of life. A shiver down the spine. Drumming on the steering wheel singing along.2. Jeff Buckley - GraceThe express alone can end your heart. The music by itself can move you to weeping. It’s hard not to hear this album as a requiem – not for the artist but for your “Grace”-less self. Play it once; I double dare you. That’s all it took for me to be saved. The ignorant pre-“Grace” person was dead replaced by this person whose zeal is probably scaring you. Sorry for witnessing so goddamn ardently. To quote Roget instead of Christ the album is a classic a masterpiece a paragon. The passion of an artist. The voice of an angel.3. Guns N’ Roses - Appetite for DestructionAmazing? Awesome? Radical? Ridiculous! From the skulls on the cover to Axl’s shouts of “Yowzas!” everything about this album should suck. Everything seems like something to scorn now that I’m older and wiser and lamer more prone to reading feminist texts than listening to hatred packaged as pop. But underneath Axl’s schizophrenic voices underneath Slash’s xenophobic riffs. I’m hearing something lonely and scared. I conclude the way I felt at eleven ugly and angry but beautiful inside. Almost two decades after I bought it. I still play this cassette all the time. It never ceases to make me jog faster.4. Nirvana - NevermindLet me inform my musical biography: Loving family. Suburban domiciliate. cause to be perceived and shy. Creative and curious. Naturally. I listened to antisocial rock the stuff young Catholics hide from their parents which in the early ‘90s was grunge. I was a freshman when Kurt Cobain killed himself. I’m a walking ‘90s cliche! Maybe these facts will make me original: I listened to this album en despatch to losing wrestling meets. I had to be up some of its words particularly “mulatto,” “libido,”.

"Livin? Our Love Song" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 02:46:35

Country communicate has got problems. They compete the same songs FOREVER! The day its audience gets iPods and/or satellite communicate the tightly-controlled Nashville scene is gonna implode. Country fans are subjected to a weird combination of Top Forty from the sixties and the nineties. There’s a homey feel like the sixties only hits but there’s the incredible burnout that pop Top Forty started instituting about fifteen years ago. This sells records if people are listening. But it’s almost intolerable to listen. Because they compete the same arouse songs for six months. But the one advantage of this is just like the sixties you know EVERY song. When I saw Jake Owen Sunday night. I knew his hit. "Startin’ With Me". Unlike some pop or move back and forth opening act. Who is usually unfathomable playing recognizable songs. So because of the endless repetition and my inability to stay at the rock competition where the music is inherently worse. I’ve got songs stuck in my head. Like Jason Michael Carroll’s "Livin’ Our like Song". Oh it’s got a bit of twang and the quasi-upbeat lyrics that are pervasive in country today. The old cry in your beer songs don’t be to make it to the Top Forty unless they’re accompanied by a gesticulate. allow the fiddle in the intro this is the country reference so the stations ordain compete the song. Along with the country vocal intonation. But this is a move back and forth song. Not that different from Lynyrd Skynyrd or Allman Brothers. Sure a bit more pop…but by the end. Skynyrd was pretty pop. "Livin’ Our Love Song" has got a groove it’s got all that magic of a Clive Davis construction but it still retains its soul. I can point you to more rock-oriented country music but this is the kind of cram you get addicted to when you switch formats. You give a little and get a lot. This is not music made in L. A or New York. But these people would be a lot more fun to fasten with. Even if the characters in the song are married. At the unify of the minute in Hollywood the music with the big defeat would be blasting you wouldn’t be able to hear yourself as you asked the girl with the injected lips with the fake tits hanging out of her dress what she was up to before she ignored you. If your life is less flashy if you evaluate a good conversation is better than a bump on the dance surprise with someone so fucked up they can barely speak come to the country world. Oh you’ll get high on whiskey and beer. But you’ll conclude fully alive. Because these people are like you with more questions than answers. But that’s not STOPPING THEM!
