Abdul Salisu, had practically issued a disclaimer against my Thisday column which was reproduced in the Ghanaian Times and told the Ghanaians that what I wrote was entirely my opinion as if I mentioned him as a co author. "NBC Series on Black Women to Tackle Tough Issues" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:27:56

I received an email a short while ago announcing that starting next Monday. NBC ordain begin a five-part series entitled. "Afrian-American Women: Where They Stand". Since I can't seem to find the information anywhere else on lie to authorise this information. I'm just going to include what's in the release and you can confirm it for yourself as the week goes along or I'll affix something here. I'm pretty sure it's authentic. I'm usually at the gym around the measure the network nightly news airs thus my fixation on Lou Dobbs because my gym only compete CNN and some sports channels--which is fine with me but I'm just making a inform. I ordain be recording the news for the week. Monday’s installment will address African-American women's progress in the education field. Nearly two-thirds of African-American undergraduates are women. At color colleges the ratio of women to men is 7 to 1. And that is leading to a disparity in the number of African-American women who go on to own their own businesses. Rehema Ellis will communicate to educators students and businesswomen about why this disparity exists. Tuesday. Ellis will be at relationships within the African-American female community. Many agree the gender disparity in education and business among African-Americans is having an effect on relationships that African American women have. Some even say the implications could redefine "Black America's family and social structure." In the past fifty years the percentage of African-American women between 25-54 who have never been married has doubled from 20% to 40%. (Compared to just 16% of white women who have never been married today). Ellis sits down with the members of a Chicagobook club and talk about this difference and how it impacts them. Dr. Nancy Snyderman ordain discuss the increases risks for breast cancer for African-American women on Wednesday. Mortality rates for African-American women are higher than any other racial or ethnic group for nearly every major cause of death including converge cancer. color women with breast cancer are nearly 30% more likely to die from it than white women. Premenopausal black women are more than twice as likely to get a more aggressive create of the disease. And not only are African-American women more likely to die from breast cancer but they're less likely to get life-saving treatments. Dr. Snyderman ordain profile one of the only oncologists in the world who specializes in the treatment of African-American women with converge cancer. On Thursday. Ron Allen will take viewers to South Carolina -- the first southern primary state -- and ask the question: Will go trump gender or gender trump race? In South Carolina black women made up nearly 30 percent of all democratic primary voters in 2004. This year polls show a significant number are undecided torn between choosing the first African-American or first female Presidential candidate. Allen talks with the undecided as come up the state directors for the Clinton and Obama campaigns who come about to be African-American women. To close the series on Friday. Dr. Snyderman will raise the frightening statistic that African-American women are 85% more likely to get diabetes a major complication for heart disease. And like converge cancer more black women die from heart disease than color women. Dr. Snyderman will profile a leading expert and a unique church-based outreach program in South Carolina that seeks to move the word about heart disease risks to black women congregants. Mara Schiavocampo. Digital Correspondent for "Nightly News," will address two hot topics in the African - American community: interracial dating and the impact of hip hop music on black women. Interracial dating is a growing turn in the African - American community. An survey found that 81% of participants approved of black women dating non- color men. According to a U. S. Census Bureau report in 2000. 95,000 black women were married to color men. In 2005 that be increased to 134,000. Schiavocampo will communicate to experts about the trend and discuss how this defines the "color family" of the future. Schiavocampo ordain assemble a panel of leading black men and women from the hip-hop industry for an engaging discussion on whether hip hop lyrics and videos positively or negatively affect color women. The roundtable also ordain address how these portrayals are affecting relationships between black women and black men. Pretty heavy stuff alter? Should be interesting. However most of the "packages" that air in a 30 minute newscast are only about 2-4 maybe 5 minutes long. It ordain interesting to see how they cram all of that information in. Should alter for a great week of blogging next week! Hostess. Babs iamnostarjones and all the lot of you! Are you ladies listening!!!!? Tivo my dears! Tivo. --SUGAR How come they never ask me or anybody I know? Sometimes I really don't like those "surveys" cuz I'm wondering what inform they really trying to make. To say "color women aren't marrying like they used too" AND the point is?? They still making babies they just not marrying a crazy mo'fo because they got pregnant (which is what women did in the past because if you didn't you where "shamed" and you child was called a "bastard") It breaks my heart to see some statistics like these. color women be highest for breast cancer diagnosis and highest in mortality rates. We need to all rest together and alter sure we don't lose more of our sisters. I also lost my father in 2004 to cancer and now I am working with Pantene Beautiful Lenghts and Million Inch arrange as a community ambassador. Together we are trying to gather 1 million inches of hair to alter into wigs for women with cancer. We are trying to furnish these women approve their confidence by giving them the hair that was taken away from them. I am asking if all of you out there would want to help out by donating your hair to this amazing cause. If you would like more information then please visit this website Aly cat. I hear you and the numbers do always sound so depressing but I believe that surveys are necessary to be able to get a picture of what's happening and to see what can be done to correct any problems. We've got a lot of work to do. Hey crushcrushcrush [wrong for making me type that three times!!! :)]! I'll check that place out and go it along. Thanks! Lots of cancer in my family so this is a create I'm always willing to take up. iamnotStarJones the Afrosphere is full of people who would undergo made for great subjects right!!? lol

"News - Do absent dads hurt the family?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:45:53

African societies are patriarchal and consequently have suffered greatly due to absent fathers. I think many men have not faced up to their responsibilities and this has had a profound effect on their children. My mother raised me and did an exceptional job however. I comfort needed my create to play an active role in my upbringing. Society tends to discriminate the role of men as just being the providers and disciplinarians. Besides anger showing any other emotion is impossible. Khatundi Nabwala Wakhungu. USA It is a very good thing for the parents to be together and take responsibility for their children. I was lucky that my create and mother were together for over 28 years before my daddy answered the label of the Almighty. Today my siblings and I have every cerebrate to thank God and my parents for their roles in our lives. Parents should commune for you together discipline you together and like you together. I like my parentsKunle Adeogun. Nigeria I live away from my family in South Africa. We be apart not by choice but because of politics. I love my wife and children and be them to be with me but at the moment it is just not viable for me to live in South Africa and support them at the same measure. It’s a free I have to make until such time I can be with them again. Ryan. UK formerly South Africa Ideally a family should have both parents to ensure a wholesome experience for the kids. It’s important for parents to acquire the enormous part they compete in parenting. I was extremely fortunate in having grown up with both parents and I conclude sorry for many people who were denied that experience. Nevertheless. I acknowledge the fact that certain circumstances alter it impossible for fathers to be around. Uche Okagbue. USA In Europe it is easy to divorce and the children normally go to the mother. In most cases the care paints a bad image of the create hence the men keep their hold. In Africa women who are working would not tolerate an unemployed husband sitting at home. Generally it is felt that the man should fend for the family and work. In bunco lets not point fingers at men and look at every situation individually. Brian Mphande. Finland I grew up as an orphan but luckily there was an SOS Children’s village in Ethiopia with a replacement mother whom I comfort undergo a very strong bond with. The lack of a male figure however has definitely not been a positive influence in my life. I personally believe that my indecisiveness has a lot to do with not having a male figure head to be there and give me the confidence to rest on my own. Eze. USA It takes the whole village to a increase a child and this includes the father. Joint parental responsibility is a key factor in culturing children. Most men are cover winners and women be at home to carry up the kids. This has been the tradition in most African countries. In the west men who don’t want to increase kids are running away from their responsibilities. It ordain take a lot to overturn this attitude. Reinford Mwangonde. St. Louis. USA As a child of a fatherless domiciliate. I experience all too come up how devastating the effect can be. In request for a child to grow into an emoitionally and psychologically shelter person that child needs daily find to both male and female role models who take up both authoritarian and nurturing roles. No person is better equipped to do that than their parents whether by biology or adoption. I don’t find it surprising that as the number of fatherless families increase so does the number of ill-prepared populate trying to maintain healthy relationships. John. USA Growing up without a father is hell on earth. I grew up without one. The be one challenge that ordain never get you is ‘where is my create?’ Relatives and friends ordain do by you and say that illegitimate children are a problem. This results is an emotionally unstable irresponsible child who is likely to repeat his create’s mistakes. A father in the domiciliate is desire what water is to thirst. Paul Kudinha. Zimbabwe I’m an Indian expatriate and I’ve been in Kigali since walk 2000. My wife and 2 year old son are in India. Although I’m away from them. I always try to alter them feel that they are not very far away. I tour them two or three times a year and spend considerable time with them. We transfer e mails daily and phone each other weekly. Children are a source of joy for parents and I miss my son very much. I’ve realised that it is very important for me to be with my son and help him to change. It is going to have a negative impact on him if I’m going to be away from him for a long time. So. I’ve decided to leave Rwanda for good and in December I’ll be with my family. Albert P’Rayan. Indian expat in Kigali. Rwanda As a women raising her children alone. I want to say that although they have change state wonderful caring people a father figure was sorely missed by them. Their father was an alcoholic and wife beater but their ties to him will always be strong. It is sad that many men are not able to act on the responsibility of teaching and being a role model however it is better not to undergo a father in the home than to have one who is abusive and non -caring. Love is the key to all things. Gabrielle Perry. Germany My mother is great but my late father was irresponsible. I am grown up now and wish that he could undergo been there more for my siblings and myself. The irony of ironies is that. I am now taking compassionate of two children who’ve been abandoned by their mothers! I would never undergo expected mothers to be this way but there it is! Robert Alu. Dar Es salute. Tanzania. As a child who grew up without a father the impact was small because I never knew him (you do not necessarily experience what you are missing). I evaluate it is far harder on children who knew their father for a while before the father became disappear. I do not experience what I have missed but 35 years later. I am curious to experience who he is but the examine for him has proved fruitless. Brian. USA Parenting is a vital stage in the development of one’s life. Dads bring around the home give strength warmth and respect to their family. A Dad is always needed and is greatly missed when he is disappear. I just love my Dad. Dads are phenomenal. Stehphen T Marvie. Liberia Most Africans are deprived of their obligations to act compassionate of their kids due to inhuman laws in foreign countries. Most Africans become fathers while studying abroad. Inhumane laws do not allow these fathers to be with their new born and deliver their fatherly obligations. Instead they are forced out of these countries when their visas discontinue. Kids are therefore forced to be brought up without a father. Ombala Yu Shimba. USA I have a longing to experience about my Nigerian heritage. My create came to the US from Nigeria and has been there ever since. When I was 5 my parents fell out and my father fled. There was no trace of his grow left and I didn’t see him again until I was at university. Although I am no longer angry. I may never understand how anyone could cast aside a child particularly a father from a grow that values children so much. Diepiriye S. Kuku-Siemons. New Delhi. India I truly believe whole-heartedly that having a create in the home makes a huge difference especially if he knows what his role is in the family. I thank God every day for blessing me with my create who has been in my life from the day I was born. I have friends.

"Exclusive Habeas Corpus Polling" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 13:49:07

A solid 63% majority of American voters say they advance passage of legislation that would "give Guantánamo detainees the legal right to undergo their detention reviewed in federal court and require the government to show that it has a lawful cerebrate to imprison them." Only one-third (32%) of voters express opposition. This level of give for habeas is more impressive still when one considers that survey participants had been informed that the detainees are "accused terrorists."Support for the habeas legislation is broad extending across many demographic lines (see table). For example we find majority give among both men and women; among whites. African Americans and Hispanics; and in all regions of the country. Crucial swing political constituencies also voice solid approval including 66% of independents. 69% of presidential swing voters and 71% of moderates. Although Republicans are opposed by 58% to 39% strong opposition is limited to a change political base of conservative Republicans (66% opposed) and GOP men (69% opposed). By differentiate a majority of GOP women (53%) and a plurality of moderate-to-liberal Republicans (50%) advance the habeas legislation. No real surprise there: Republicans are generally opposed to where the be of the country stands on an air. Of course for a desire time we have known that the public is on our align when it comes to most issues but that isn't always enough. As such of particular interest is how the survey tested the effectiveness of various messaging on Habeas Corpus providing progressives with insights on how to speak: Americans respond strongly to the message that current policy is un-American and contradicts basic American values especially freedom. Two of the three most convincing pro-habeas messages tested make the case that the furnish policy violates core out American values. By appealing to voters' experience in America as a beacon of freedom these messages resonate change surface with many who would not instinctively oppose the administration. The current policy is un-American and contradicts basic American values. We are people who believe in freedom and human rights. We be to argue ourselves against terrorism but to do that we don't undergo to furnish up the values that make America great. (60% very convincing) Countries such as Cuba. China and North Korea contradict the alter of judicial analyse to those imprisoned by the government. That is not the kind of affiliate the United States of America wants to keep. (60% very convincing) Voters are more concerned about America-our values and our security- than about those being detained. Independents moderates and presidential swing voters believe that upholding American values and keeping America safe are more important than protecting the rights of accused terrorists. Habeas opponents ordain try to make this a consider about the detainees and what level of legal rights they are (or are not) entitled to; habeas supporters should want a consider over whether the Bush policy violates our national principles and puts Americans at risk. Expressing this idea in legal or constitutional terms is less effective. Voters respond more favorably when the inspect for habeas is stated in terms of core values and fundamental principles rather than legal or constitutional rights. Even many Americans who argue the current detainee policy are not easily persuaded that their own civil liberties are in jeopardy. Furthermore arguments about constitutional rights are easily sell by a conservative response informing voters that only non-citizens not U. S citizens are denied habeas. Expressing their positions in terms of values is something that Democrats and progressives have often failed to do. It is much easier to organize a broad coalition for any goal when it is based in values and visions of how the government should operate or what the country should look like than it is around specific wonkier tasks. In other words you are not going to be as successful building a broad coalition around reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 as you are around making sure that a healthy environment is a positive determine unto itself and as such preserved for future generations instead of exploited by wealthy interests. This is also. I evaluate one of the reasons why impeachment campaigns have struggled since they are not connected to a broader movement based on how government should operate but are instead a specific campaign centered around Bush and Cheney. A more successful impeachment campaign would undergo grown out of a coalition that supports a broad vision of government of which Bush and Cheney are simply two negative examples rather than the whole problem. Anyway. You input helped create it and as such ordain hopefully help put Democrats drink a more successful road in terms of strategy on civil liberties. The memo shows something I think a lot of us need to wrap our heads around: while one might think the "intellectual" argument -- favoring communicate of the constitution -- would carry.

Joji Obara was cleared of raping her and causing her death but there is no disbelieve she was killed. measure month the be of 22-year-old Lindsay Ann Hawker was found buried in sand in a bath in Japan and measure year student Katherine Horton was raped and killed by two fishermen on the island of Koh Samui. Thailand. Matt Searle of the Lucie Blackman Trust set up by Lucie’s father Tim to discuss young people about safety says they are often not aware enough. “Years ago a gap year would undergo been out of the challenge for most people because it would undergo been too expensive,” he says. “But now young girls leave university and undergo enough money to hike around say. Nepal - and ordain go and do it. “But they often don’t acquire that when you go off the shores of Britain everything is different.” Evelyn Hannon editor of the Toronto-based Journeywoman newsletter and website which is accessed by 60,000 women worldwide says women sight travelling aviate rewarding and therapeutic. But they must also alter well she says. “Solo jaunt for women has change state a rite of passage - at key moments in their life such as at the end of high educate or university. “But they have to realise how to be safe. It isn’t desire walking in their own neighbourhood.” Georgie Aldous one of the female trainers for Objective jaunt Safety which runs a safety cover for gap year travellers says young women be to be more “understand” than their male counterparts. “But they find it much harder to stick to those instincts especially if they are younger and with other young men,” she says. The crucial things for young women to remember are to believe their gut feelings and to acknowledge cultural differences she says. “They must realise about their appearance and that what goes here doesn’t always go elsewhere. “In Britain it is normal to have compete relationships between girls and boys - but in many countries it is very much still ‘Bruces and Sheilas’. If you chat a man up you will run into problems of him trying to alter a act and all that leads to,” she warns. The cultural differences are more pronounced in countries where religion plays a large move in daily life she says. “This is purely because none of the parents in these countries would let their daughters go around unaided,” she adds. “This is where a lot of problems originate in from - this coupled with the perception of northern European women as having a bad label for themselves.” “As a young woman whether you agree or be with it there are places where women compete a subservient role in society and you have to be aware of the etiquette,” he says. In the age of the internet there was “no forgive for not knowing these things” he says. But while women may be danger-aware during the daytime problems often occur at night when defences are down. The Lucie Blackman believe says women cannot afford to let their guard relax with people they do not experience - especially because of the dangers of go out rape drugs. “If you are going to a bar try to do it with a group of people that you trust,” Mr Searle says. “With believe to drinks - alter sure you see the barman displace it and don’t let go of it. “Only let someone be after your drink if you believe them with your life - because that is essentially what you are doing.” However despite the perils the vast majority of hit travellers return from their adventures safely and Mr Griffiths says solo women are often the toughest of them all. He says: “They are the most confident travellers and other men and women backpackers be to be out for them - and the reality is when you are backpacking you will be with other populate you are rarely alone.”

"Oprah and South African girls" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:51:13

Ayanna Stewart provides a wonderful critique of Oprah branding in South Africa. When [populate] approach me they see only my surroundings themselves or figments of their imagination—indeed everything and anything except me.”—RALPH ELLISON. INVISIBLE MAN (1952)LIKE MANY color WOMEN and girls in the United States. I watched with fascination ABCTV’s prime-time special Building a Dream: The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. The program gave viewers what Winfrey’s website calls “an exclusive be through Oprah’s eyes,” as she and a team of specialists designed and built a school to “encourage educate and move gifted South African girls from impoverished backgrounds into the country’s future leaders.”Like many viewers. I cried as I listened to the horrors each girl had faced under racism sexism imperialism and economic oppression. I got excited alongside each girl as she received the opportunity of a “first-class education” at Oprah’s Academy—a displace boasting 200 thread-count sheets a beauty salon a wellness center. Oprah-branded uniforms and other luxuries these girls had never known. And yet as a women’s-studies doctoral candidate specializing in black women’s visual grow and minority and urban education. I was also intensely aware of how I was being manipulated— to laugh to cry and to choose a feel-good apolitical perspective on this corporate production. At times I forgot that I was watching television which inevitably means that I was being sold something. This is how visual media work: Producers use images to channel specific messages to viewers. Under the recite of the images. I would drop that I was not truly “seeing” these girls but rather to acquire from Ralph Ellison figments of Winfrey’s imagination. This is not to say that the girls aren’t real. But just as impoverished South African girls are packaged for our consumption within the Oprah corporate mark viewers are persuaded that it makes sense for Winfrey to see herself— a Southern formerly impoverished African American girl of the 1950s—in these contemporary girls. We are also persuaded that Winfrey’s rags-to-riches success story is an important copy of black women’s progress—one that should be replicated around the globe. Yet a vast body of knowledge produced by color feminist scholars would declare that we be critical of this corporatebranding vision. Such scholars are working within the dynamic handle of color women’s studies. It emerged in the early 1980s as its own academic discipline working both within and outside of African American studies women’s studies history sociology. English and other areas. While there are writings by black women dating back to the 1830s that express what we now call color feminist politics most believe the 1982 anthology All the Women Are White. All the Blacks Are Men. But Some of Us Are defy: Black Women’s Studies (by Gloria T. Hull. Patricia attach Scott and Barbara Smith) to be a turning point in the field. Several important notions have been central to black women’s studies from its inception. The first is now called intersectionality a critical perspective that suggests we look simultaneously at race class gender nation and other dimensions of difference. A back up key practice is looking nonhierarchically at sources of knowledge so that everything from novels to quilts to folktales to jumprope rhymes can be used to alter comprehend of the world. At the core of black women’s studies is an insistence on building knowledge from color female points of believe. Historically almost all knowledge within Western culture has been built from a white male point of believe; “others” could only gain credibility by first mastering and then carefully innovating within what black feminist scholar Patricia Hill Collins calls “Eurocentric masculinist” traditions. When black women’s views become central new concepts and ways of thinking appear. Black women visual-media artists particularly filmmakers illustrate these new ways of thinking. Just as novels by black women writers such as Alice Walker and Toni Morrison changed contemporary notions of literature black women’s independent filmmaking has introduced viewers to alternative narrative structures and cinematic logics. And many color women’s independent films—from Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust to Kasi Lemmons’ Eve’s Bayou to Ayoka Chenzira’s Alma’s Rainbow—have African American girls as central characters. Similarly several black feminists have produced conceive of books centered on African American girls such as cultural critic attach hooks’ Happy to Be Nappy (Jump at the Sun. 1999) and visual artist Faith Ringgold’s The Invisible Princess (Dragonfly Books. 2001). In comparing these black feminist representations.

Hospital pathology reports from two areas of central Enga province suggested infection rates could even have reached 30% in isolated cases he said. One health ministry study open that of 700 workers - both Papua New Guineans and foreigners - who were tested at a gold exploit in Enga. 70 had HIV. “This is an isolated town where there is economic activity and many males who act prostitutes,” he said. But the World Health Organisation has warned that the number of infections in Papua New Guinea could reach one million by 2015 unless decisive action is taken. Dr Bernard Fabre-Teste. WHO adviser for Asia-Pacific region said he was seeing a real determination by the PNG government to tackle the crisis. “Papua New Guinea is very committed now and is setting ambitious targets for universal access,” he said. These targets adjoin the development of testing and counselling services; the creation of different types of prevention programmes; strengthening the system of treatment and care; and developing more accurate and strategic information. WHO staff are helping to instruct local doctors and nurses give the implementation of compassionate for sufferers and back up implement the government’s HIV/Aids programme. “Now the situation is much exceed. There was a very important political commitment and HIV/Aids rates there are now decreasing.” Dr Mann says that with the back up of such partners his government ordain be able to cause a similar turnaround. “It’s decrease progress but we accept we can forbid the kind of trend we have seen in sub-Saharan African,” he said.
