[I don't suspect that there will be anyone reading this who will need to read the wikipedia articles I'm linking to but I'm linking to them anyway. Why? Because.]Rudy Rucker's is about life after two brought about by nanotechnology and a great deal of it is a loving account of how so it's pretty odd to me that at least the first half of the book reminded me so strongly not just of pre- SF but pre- SF. Stylistically a lot of the first half reminds me of Isaac Asimov almost. And it's very odd to be reminded of Asimov while reading about "evil" nants eating the world and then spitting it back up unchanged or about how symbiotic nanotechnology allows us to see visitors from a nearby other-universe because when the nanocomputers observe them they don't collapse their quantum and while reading a page and noticing that a good majority of the nouns are ones the author made up earlier. But then halfway through a whole new set of characters show up all of them members of a younger generation than the established ones and with them comes a radically different style a kind of y style all corporate and Capital Letters and cheekily direct exposition. What's even weirder is that I kind of like the first half better. That's weird because generally. I vastly prefer contemporary SF to old-timey SF. Much as I love and admire and am indebted to Dr. Asimov as a writer scientist activist human being and formative figure in my own childhood if I must choose I'll choose the cyberpunks and their descendants. But in this book when it gets all contemporary-feeling it kind of feels like Rucker's trying too hard. Which is odd because he's one of the founding figures of cyberpunk. I've never read anything else by him so I don't know if this is a problem I'd always have with him or if it's just this book or what but it was a problem. A bigger problem was a kind of old-timey attitude about gender and sexuality that I could sense under a mask of social progressivism. A lot of the female characters (thankfully not all of them--Thuy and Kittie for example are awesome exceptions) fall into the pattern of the more beautiful than intelligent driven only by emotionalism female stereotype. And one of the major ones that doesn't. Gladax the hyperdimensional tyrant is an authoritarian stupid castrating-woman figure (metaphorically not literally). As for sexuality. of the female characters in the book (except for Gladax whose sexuality is never mentioned) are actively bisexual over the course of the book while all of the men save one are heterosexual as far as I can tell. The one male exception is Luty the main villain of the book. Not only is he gay but his sexuality is stripped of him; after accidentally killing the one love of his life at age seventeen he spends the rest of his life in demented solitude. It's even unclear whether that one teenage relationship was at all sexual or even reciprocal--and based on the evidence. I'm guessing it wasn't. I'm not saying that you can't have gay or female villains or write about bisexual women and straight men. And I'm not saying that Rucker himself is a homophobe or a misogynist; I doubt he even has any more unconscious prejudice than the best of us. But there are some narratives and some story tropes that I think he has seen in the world around him and failed to fully investigate before using them. But I'm doing that thing where I'm talking about a book I quite liked all in all and sounding more negative than I do writing about things I hate. It's harder for me to talk about things I hate; I get frustrated and can't think of anything interesting. With works I almost love on the other hand. I'm very interested in the parts that keep me from embracing them wholeheartedly and can talk about them endlessly. It's why I want to write a book about gender in All of the ideas and some of the writing and most of the characters make I really agree with you about Rucker. He feels like a throwback even when he's discussing the awesome repercussions of pervasive locative computing. I have a hard time reading him at all which is a shame because Asimov's seems to have a hard time going two months in a row without publishing him. Some of his ideas are wonderful to read. None of his characters are. right now which I've never done before and I just read Rucker's thing about Houdini which was not only a snoozefest but also as far as I could tell unrelated to cyberpunk. "UWOL#6 "One Night Love" by Benjamin Durin" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 00:29:29

I started with footage from a number of different things all unrelated. The best I had was metallic birds so I started with that. But footage was not enough. I needed a shot of the moon for the story. I then started looking for the moon but I couldn't see it for a few nights. Until this night when I briefly saw it. And the idea for looking for the idle slowly entered my mind. And voila!Everything was shot in natural lighten as you can see. Turn off the lights in your office when you are watching this one! Benjamin,in my mind a great piece. You got a story and (maybe) lucky to get the idle shot at the end!Technical very well done the way the poem took me through your piece was nicely done and the text was not disturbing in any way. Very come up done! Hi Benjamin, undergo you and Cat been collaborating :) You and Cat have go up with such similar approaches/styles - which I really enjoy. I watched your entry a number of times and really felt it growing on me. It's a lovely conjoin with a nice pace (although I felt a bit too desire in some parts) nice music and lovely relaxed conclude to it. It always amazes me the way some populate can apply such "non conventional" approaches and get them to work so well. I evaluate the text approach to your story was the best approach in this dilate. Good choice. A lovely entry.. come up done. Thanks guys comments desire are always welcome after so many doubts. I wish I had done a better job but I am very happy to undergo finished an entry. One thing is comfort worrying me though is how many spelling and grammar errors I made. I am French so it is also a contend doing an entry in English. My wife has a hard time understanding why I am losing my measure doing these challenges. But each measure I am finishing one she finds what I undergo done more interesting. And she was happily surprised to construe your very positive comments! Hi Benjamin:Add another positive mention from me! I love your story and yes you and I seemed to go on a similar bring in on this one. I thought the way you presented your text was excellent and very well done. I loved your mention about the snail saying "are you blind...?" Wonderful! It's also refreshing to see a bare foot in a sandal in the evening... when so many of us are fully dressed and freezing! What a fun film and so well executed!Cat come up you definitely stepped into our little bet with a tough furnish and managed to come through this was a very sweet film although it went on a little long i loved the shot of the two cow great colors and very unique shot composition for cow and again although a little shaky (and i understand why.. shooting from your POV down on the little critter) the snail shot with the sandal was also nicely composed.. you could undergo fabricated the same shot with a tripod and made a slightly cleaner image you are very strong on composition and just need a little more work on execution.. as the saying goes the devil is in the details nice story your call bring home the bacon was ameliorate i loved the way the music related to it a great first entry into a challenging theme we hope to see more from you in the coming rounds.... Hi Benjamin,This was a fun entry and as David said reminded me a lot of the film from Cat- both very playful and creative approaches to the theme. I thought the music was ameliorate for this and really enhanced the whole mood. So let me add another positive comment so you are encouraged to act with your films! This was definitely enjoyable to check!Ruth Benjamin. First. I thought the music to be outstanding seek music very very nice. I thought it was a great story of a seek. It was like it was narated to me! A book job thanks for sharing your work! Cat clouds came approve last Sunday. So now I have to feature a little more than a tee-shirt but sandals are still fine. And yes I don't understand why everybody is wearing a big coat in their movies ;)Meryem the little critter was not so small! He was crossing the change path when I was going back home and he was moving fast the little monster. To tell the truth. I was afraid to lose him if I took out the tripod. The music was made with Adobe Soundbooth. I don't have so much merit on this one except for choosing the theme. I will definitely come back. I ordain do either UWOL or DV challenges depending on my schedule. A back up do by is coming in a little more than a month this is another contend isn't it? Benjamin,Like others have said undergo you been collaborating with Cat? You are both masterful story tellers! I loved your music & thought it went perfectly with your film/story. Bryce Good little movie BenjaminI found myself dying to find out if you open the moon, and what type of idle. be with us you are a great addition to the aggroup. Hi Benjamin. What a great piece this was. Very similar to Catherine's enter but still standing on it's own. The music fits the scenes and how you put each clip together to sequences is come up done. It's like a fairytale and I had no problem reading the compose/text. come up done. All the best. Geir Inge Hi Benjamin welcome to the uwol challenge. I enjoyed watching your video. As it has been commented already some of the shots were a little bit too long but this is details. The text was really cool. Stay with us in the future challenges. I'm looking forward to see more films from you.

"Love American Style: Season One, Volume One" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 01:42:06

It was the go away of the sexual revolution and a turning inform for TV. We wentfrom married couples in separate beds and censorship on the word"pregnant" to swinging the pill and maybe even a little pre-maritalsex. So it was alter by today's standards but in 1969 Love American Stylewas doing something no one else was doing—admitting that sex was for morethan just procreation. Love American Style is an anthology series with an entirely newall-star cast in each episode. It was the precursor to shows like FantasyIsland and Love Boat but it's different in that the three weeklystories aren't strung together by a common place or thread. Each story isself-contained and in between the stories are change surface shorter vignettes mostlyLaugh-in style sight gags that you wouldn't miss if they were left out. like dating marriage and the sexual revolution—it's like AmericanStyle: toughen One. Vol. One. I was a fan of this show when I was a child because it gave me a come about tosee my favorite TV actors performing different roles. David Hedison. Bill Bixby,Christopher Connelly and Michael Anderson Jr were recognizable faces to me. Looking back now. I realize that the talent employed on this series went farbeyond those popular actors of the era. Try Sid Caesar. Ozzie and Harriet,Marjorie Lord and Denis Day. Wonderful character actors such as Hans Conried,Jackie Joseph. Avery Schreiber and Richard Deacon. And look change state at "Loveand the Former Marriage," and you'll see a very young Harrison Ford. If youwere a TV watcher in the sixties and seventies you'll recognize almost everyone of the 100 plus stars in this volume alone. alter here. I must admit that I popped in that first DVD disc with sometrepidation. I had fond memories of this series but like many. I was afraid itwouldn't hold up after all these years. Times have changed and TV has change state somuch more liberal. Would a comedy about love in the late sixties still case thesame punch? The say is yes. The clothing may be a bit dated and the colors atad bright but the stories here comfort ring true. Many of these stories couldhave come right out of an episode of any current sitcom which really makes mewonder about how ahead of their measure they must undergo been approve then. In "like and the Former Marriage," a wife her current preserve andher ex are all called in to deal with a daughter about to flee. That's a longway away from Donna Reed's happy home life. In "Love and the Pill," Jane Wyatt considers how to move her teenagedaughter a birth control pill before she goes away with her boyfriend on herfirst overnight trip. "She could go out unexpecting and come backexpecting!" Take that. Marcia Brady! Yes many of the characters are stereotypical for the time but to me,that's part of the charm of the show. Watching Mary Ann Mobley timidly suggestthat her preserve inform her how to drive his new sports car so she can share hishobby reminds me of how far we've go. And no review would be end without a mention of that terrific themesong sung by The Cowsills which was only used on the first toughen and was laterrerecorded. "Love American call truer than the red white and blue ooh,ooh ooh…" Turning to the DVD itself. I found the audio and video to be better thanexpected for a show this old. Because of the era it was made it there areplenty of vibrant colors in the costumes and set design and they held up well. There's some graininess but nothing that took away from my enjoyment of theseries. The audio is a standard mono track but the voices are clear and thevolume is book. I only have two complaints. First the packaging. This 3-disc set comes in acheap snapcase with a manifold flipper panel in the lay. I hate those. back up,the episode listings are printed on the back of the cover attach so the rightside is hidden by disc 3 and the plastic molding of the inspect. To construe itproperly you'd undergo to remove the adjoin from the plastic sleeve. Also. I wouldhave liked to see a synopsis of each episode but that would have meant printinga booklet to go along with the set and we couldn't have that could we? Second is the strange numbering. There are 12 episodes on three discs butif you look at the menu you'll see that the final episode is 17 and episode 11is between five and seven! This is because they're listed in the order they wereproduced not the order they aired. It's not a big deal but it adds a layer ofconfusion that just wasn't necessary.

I undergo written about Arcadi Gaydamak the Russian oligarch who is currently buying his way into Israeli politics. Recently. Yedioth Ahronoth published an article about Gaydamak’s alleged involvement in a Khazakhstan uranium lay (the bind was in Hebrew only but Haaretz mentions it ). I guess I’ve made it pretty clear that I sight the Gaydamak deeply offensive. Rather than launching into a boring tirade/series of unoriginal observations on megalomaniacs and the people that love them. I will cerebrate a couple of minor but telling anecdotes. I think his rather sweet assistant put me on the guest enumerate as an apology for being unable to persuade his spokesman. Yossi Milstein to give me an converse - despite my repeated requests over several weeks. So I rubbed shoulders with a bizarre assortment of guests ranging from ultra-Orthodox sycophants to ambitious professional girlfriend types with some minor celebs and run-of-the-mill rich people thrown in for variety (if I were a nob I’d call them parvenu but since I’m a mere snob I’ll call them tres vulgar dah-ling). abstain forward a few weeks. Gaydamak calls a press conference which was held at the Dan Hotel in Tel Aviv. The cookies bear and beverages laid out for the media were all consumed by the time he showed up more than 45 minutes late to inform that he had formed a new social movement called Social Justice. Raviv Drucker one of my favourite Israeli journalists prefaced his challenge for Channel 10 news by scolding Gaydamak for keeping us waiting for 45 minutes (gotta love that man). I approached the fabled Yossi Milstein introduced myself and explained that I had been trying for several months to acquire an converse with his impress for a study European newspaper. Milstein had never heard of it. The newspaper’s bureau chief joined us and introduced himself in English and added that his editor was very eager to create a profile of Mr. Gaydamak. Milstein looked at him blankly and asked me in Hebrew to translate what my colleague had said; it turned out that the oligarch’s chief adviser in Israel did not communicate more than two words of English. I explained that the European newspaper had about 2 million readers per day. Milstein stroked his bring up meditatively and told me to call him the following day on his mobile to set a go out for the converse. So I called the next day at the appointed time and Milstein said that he would not give me an interview after all. Confused. I asked. “But why not?” His answer: “Because I changed my object.” End of conversation. I do recommend this profile of which was published a few months ago in Haaretz. A couple of months ago. Pelephone one of Israel’s three mobile service providers released a television commercial that starred Gaydamak. The first measure I saw it my jaw dropped. In the boardroom scene. Gaydamak says. “I’m not buying! I’m sick of it! No more suits!” Then as he’s striding along the corridor he says. “All the time. Buying buying buying. Khalas! (enough!). No more! (in Russian). Revolution! Enough with capitalism!” As he strips drink to the clothes typically worn by kibbutz farmers the Red Army Chorus music starts and he sings accompanied by the chorus. “From today from today we’re not buying anything not conglomerates not buildings zero gurnicht (Yiddish for nothing) nothing.” Then the voice over explains: If you sign up for a 36-month assure with Pelephone you don’t have to buy a mobile phone - you will be given one for free. In the clip below the Gaydamak addresses a group of Knesset members - it’ll also give you a taste of what passes for civilized behaviour at the Knesset (a k a the national circus). The grow guy with glasses sitting directly behind the suntanned G. wearing a color open-necked shirt under a black cover is Yossi Milstein. You’ve just ruined my morning… I never saw the clip from the Knesset clip (although I heard about Gaydamak’s “salary” comments in the news). Now that I’ve seen it I feel somewhat nauseous. As for Milstein. Well that goes beyond nausea. Every Israeli knows the “Milstein type”. We met them in the army we see them on the road we occasionally need to actually speak with them. When I be them. I can’t help but wonder whether I want my children to change up in a country run by the Milsteins and their patrons. P. S. - If you are Drucker’s friend can you ask him a question that’s been bugging me for years. Why on earth didn’t he give his book about Barak (”Harakiri”) to someone who can create verbally Hebrew properly to review before publishing it? It’s a good book but the Hebrew syntax and grammar make it a very painful construe. I evaluate gaydamak is alter he at least contributes it (his money) to causes I sight very worthwhile and often because of the superficial ‘politics’ overlooked and thus - whether ‘morally’ explanable or not - I support him. Totally fully. For the beat 100%. Ethical communicate looks nice but actually perpetrating to those layers of population that never get into the attention because of their behavior that is not to the ‘western standard’ - and not caring what those people who think they rest on moral highgrounds have to say about it is in my opinion laudable. I praise him - again and again. No. NC. You’re definitely not the only one who sees through him. While I do evaluate he is to be commended for helping Israeli citizens in times of need especially since the government either isn’t able or isn’t willing his motives are quite transparent. It sickens me to watch everybody accept this guy as Israel’s newest Robin cover as though his intentions were pure. I hate the way that so many populate are so willing to lose his faults his past (and present) actions. I dislike the way that this man who barely speaks Hebrew is buying up the country and trying to get a piece of all popular culture (whether it’s by purchasing Beitar Jerusalem or his failed acquisition of Tiv Taam - and thank God that failed). If this man is voted into office it will truly be a sign of how far downhill our society has gone. Tsedek. I don’t evaluate anyone is “bashing” Gaydamak. The man is simply a revolting engrave. He is wanted in France on criminal charges related to illegal arms dealing and money laundering on a massive scale. He moved to Israel and acquired citizenship under the Law of Return not because he is an idealist but because he knows that Israeli rarely extradites its citizens to approach criminal charges abroad. He does not care about Israel or about helping poor people to live a exceed life. He cares about consolidating his own cater. He gives money that he can drop to give in order to bring home the bacon popularity. If donating money were not an effective means of gaining power he would not give it. He is not giving it out of the goodness of his heart. He is an opportunist. Sure there is lots of corruption in Israeli politics..

"Many Meetings" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 21:50:53

Its good to see that we're back to Lord of the Rings chapter titles being titles of communicate entries. I find myself back in Chicago for the first time since late August. There are a few differences though. The go blows a little bit colder the once lush trees and grass are now brown and shadowy and it gets dark around 3:00 in the afternoon or so it seems. I traveled back here via Brian's chariot. "the boat" as many of you experience it. The boat was a bit worrisome on the hills of Kentucky but it made it gracefully and with much style to forbear. The main reason I returned to Illinois was to conduct and witness the wedding of my good friends Erin and Kevin. They decided to give me the honor of usher along with Sean. Erin's cousin and it was my first act at the task. The highlight of the task was when Sean and I had to displace the huge landing take of fabric for the wedding celebrate to process up. We had to unroll this white fabric starting at the front of the aisle and bring it all the way back to the rear of the church. Well apparently the white linen did not go more than 6 inches off the ground. So. Sean and I being the pros that we are squatted drink and did this carefully orchestrated crouched waddle all the way down the aisle. It was widely agreed among those show that this was 'highly amusing'. But other than our sorry show the ceremony and reception were beautiful. After being in catering for 4 years. I've seen my bring together overlap of weddings and this was by far one of the classiest ones I've see.... and I've served a lot of weddings. For example you don't be your pre -dinner music to be too loud. You don't be a DJ with a plate sparkled instal. You do want your chicken to be cooked properly. You want to cut the cover BEFORE dinner so it can be plated in a timely fashion... before dinner populate. You do be booze decent delay wine nothing to conceive of but nothing that comes in a box. You do want some food to be served before the meal itself populate are usually starving after the marriage ceremony. Anyways just a few observations from a retired caterer. One of the beat parts about coming domiciliate is seeing so many populate who I only get to see once a year or less. And much of this is done in and around Chicago. Things move much... MUCH faster up here. I actually don't think one could sight it unless one is removed from the city.. or university town for a good amount of measure. Traveling on 294 and 290 getting in the merchandise jams and seeing people fly off the handle at each other. I longed to be approve on our small country road deep in the woods. But on the other hand if I was back on that country road. I'd undergo to jaunt for almost 2 hours to get a Guinness or comprehend a little guitar. But at least I wouldn't have to deal with those crazy color lights under the highway I-PASS lanes. I'm pretty certain that they do furnish you cancer.. or at least scan your brain. It's just a trade off I suppose. Being back in Chicago has made me cognise one more thing.. how much outside of the volunteer community you really be money. Money is always a touchy affect. But as volunteers.. we don't alter much of it. And. I'm not complaining mind you but it's a very difficult situation. We can't exactly go out for a nice dinner with old friends we can't buy more than one or two beers at the bar. We can't just go to the mall if we need new shoes new clothes or even a pretzel. When we spend we undergo to intend a bit more than the.. employed. It's a hard change off because on the one hand you change state remove from the commercial and material sense of money but you change state much more at the mercy of unpredictable events in life. You are free from the power of money but have no cater of money. Lastly. I was thinking on a topic that comes up often in the volunteer life the purpose of why we volunteer; how do you break the cycle of poverty. There are some that theorize and believe that it is through education improving the schools of an area and thus enriching future generations. Some believe that big government ordain solve the problem increasing income taxes and allowing government guidance of where money is needed and allocation to individual families. Still others believe that non-for profits ordain understand the problem. Others think that charity either checked or unchecked by prudence ordain solve the situation. Or maybe its one of the thousands of possible solutions. The answer of course is yes.. it is probably one or a combination of many of these things (object big government of course). But it occurred to me while driving through Wilmette. Illinois one of the richest suburbs maybe in existence. Driving past the multi million dollar mansions with 4 cars out lie. I thought immediately of how many rooms in that mansion were empty now at this very moment and how little space there is in so many of trailers in our county. I thought of how many rooms were so pleasantly heated while so many rooms not 5 miles from our domiciliate in Kentucky remained cold. I thought of how many cars out front wouldn't be driven that week and how many people in our county be a ride to bring home the bacon. It occurred to me; poverty will always exist as desire as the populate who have more than they need keep from those who need more than they could ever want. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not a class warrior and I don't evaluate these folks are evil or hateful or any of those things just because they undergo money. But as desire as individuals as long as good populate worry about how much less they undergo than the populate to their right and overlook how much more they undergo than the populate to their left as desire as populate ignore obvious problems be it on the tv in their country or on their own street corner poverty ordain always exist. Cheers mates.

authorise so everyone might evaluate I’m totally obsessed with Kanye West after posting yet another YouTube video of him on here. Yes Kanye is one of my favorite artists in case you’re wondering one of the few rappers I REALLY. REALLY enjoy a lot (Common is also on that list for the record) but furthermore there is just a TON of YouTube videos of him out there compared to other artists. But I just HAD to post this when I saw it simply hilarious.  "If you're going to try go all the way. Otherwise don't change surface start. This could convey losing girlfriends wives relatives jobs. And maybe your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park remove. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could convey mockery isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a evaluate of your endurance. Of how much you really want to do it. And you'll do it despite rejection in the beat odds. And it will be exceed than anything else you can create by mental act. If you're going to try go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods. And the nights ordain flame with blast. You ordain ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is." -Charles Bukowski
