Getting Our Bodies Back by Christine Caldwell

 <modified>2008-10-14T04:38+00:00

What it is: A book about how to recover lost parts of yourself and become more whole by paying attention to somatics(tendencies of the body). There are fun and engaging tools to play along as well like the “which animal are you when you get defensive” cheat sheet (which I describe a little further down this review).
Description: It talks about how we “check out” of our bodies when things become too intense (the “cold approach,” for example). And how this becomes a habitual pattern that prevents us from being fully Present and in the world.
Christine talks about bringing awareness to habitual movements as common as nail-biting or toe-roots. These unconscious movement “tags” indicate the places where our bodies have become split off from our psyches. When brought to our consciousness and confronted they’ll often tell us very plainly where our psychological suffering originated showing us where to begin reclaiming more of ourselves and becoming more whole.
Another cool thing she discusses is how when things don’t go our way we adopt defense strategies…fight flee or freeze. Caldwell goes on to identify each of these defense strategies as characterized by particular animals. Which one best matches your defense?
FIGHTBadger: All-out attack - the person who sits quietly then explodes into rage…
Bear: Intimidation - gets into funks or “moods,” people learn to avoid them
Prairie Dog: Uses distraction and hiding out as tactics…hard to pin down
Christine goes on to talk about how to establish physical emotional and cognitive boundaries so you don’t need these reactive patterns to survive. Good stuff.
Anecdote: Before we started AMP. Decker and I were into learning all kinds of body-oriented healing methodologies… massage breathwork. Reiki and Chi Gong…some of them were wackier than others (DNA Activation anyone?) but all of them focused on clearing out old patterns stuck emotion becoming more whole in ourselves etc…Anyway several of the most bad-ass body workers and practitioners who we were studying under at the time all recommended this book.
Potential Turn-Offs: It’s a pretty dogma-free unassuming piece of work. Not much here for me. It’s basically somatic psychology 101 and focused more on the dynamics than hands-on exercises.
What I Got out of it: I can personally trace breakthroughs I got around becoming less needy to practices I learned from this book. It has helped me to understand and embrace more of myself. I’m more whole as a result of this book. I also use a LOT of what I learned in here to work with clients and when facilitating the AMP course.

A Guide To Rational Living

 <modified>2008-01-16T01:56+00:00

What it is: “A Guide To Rational Living” is the first book the great psychologist adulterate Albert Ellis wrote on Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy ( REBT - later known as “cognitive therapy”)
Description: Cognitive Therapy has been clinically proven to be as effective as medication for treating depression and more effective than medication for treating insomnia.
REBT preceded and is now a subset of cognitive therapy. Dr. Albert Ellis invented REBT ( Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy ) in the 1950s when he was practicing traditional Freudian psychoanalysis. Dr. Ellis noticed that is patients who got exceed changed the way they thought about their situations. Being well versed in western philosophy Dr. Ellis recalled the great Stoic philosopher Epictetus who once said
“People are disturbed not by events but by the views which they act of them.”
Ellis started experimenting with purposefully helping his patients change the way they viewed their situations. Many of them even ones who had been in therapy for years got better rapidly.
Dr. Ellis created REBT which later evolved changed and became known as “cognitive therapy”.
REBT is based on the idea that thoughts cause emotions and influence behavior. Emotions as well behaviors can be changed by disputing irrational beliefs with facts and logic forming new rational beliefs and behaving in a way that is consistent with the new rational beliefs.
Unlike cognitive therapy. REBT places strong emphasis on modifying emotions and modifying behavior in addition to disputing irrational beliefs. REBT also posits that there are 12 core irrational beliefs that most populate undergo that cause them to experience unpleasant emotions needlessly.
In “A Guide To Rational Living” Dr. Ellis explains REBT its methods and the then top 10 irrational beliefs. Ellis is not known for being a great writer but in this book he pulls it together. The tone is direct as come up as alter free of psychobabble and you never doubt that you are being addressed by one of the great psychological minds of the 20th century.
Anecdote: I first learned of REBT in college when I was seeing a campus psychologist. One day I told him that I did not understand him when he told to “broach with my feelings”. I asked him what exactly do people do when they “broach with their feelings”. The counselor was change intensity for a few moments. He then wrote down the name of this schedule which I borrowed from the campus library.
Using REBT is a lot like jogging particularly for large issues or personal development. It has to be replied repeatedly and consistently.
However there have been a few times when I have been upset used the techniques for rationally analyzing my thoughts and felt my negative emotions go away instantly as if a switch had been turned off.
No drugs no venting to counselor or a friend no alleviate activities… just thinking.
Potential Turn-Offs: There are multiple editions of this book. To get the latest edition with the most circumscribe make sure you have the 3rd 1975 printing(august). It should have 23 chapters. Earlier editions do not.
What I Got out of it: Many means of personal development encourage populate to be dependent on things outside of themselves. Charismatic personal motivation speakers expensive CD sets books life coaches and so on.
REBT teaches you can learn to help yourself and move under your own cater.
You may use <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <label> <em> <i> <strike> <strong> in your comment.
What You Should Think About Population Growth

 <modified>2007-12-12T16:24+00:00

Relentless defense of unsubstantiated optimism is bad behavior that rarely seems to displace the sort of criticism it deserves. On the other hand relentless defense of unsubstantiated pessimism is also bad behavior if amply criticized. People who are at their best crusading to increase awareness of serious problems be in times when there is no shortage of serious problems being met with inadequate public response. That makes it all the stranger that some should choose instead to let go from reality and spread doom and gloom for its own sake.
worry of global overpopulation may be as old as the first suspicions that the world is round. Yet as a widespread preoccupation it seems to have emerged from the role bad math and worse pontification played in adding “Malthusian” to the vocabularies of educated people. The old argument was simple enough — population was expanding geometrically while food supply was not. Therefore. “humanity is doomed!!!!!”
The math was lousy because it presumed neither increased bespeak for food nor increased capacity for human intellect could bring about changes in the nature of agricultural growth. Yet that shoddy thinking amounts of a relatively minor blunder compared to the alarmist conclusions Thomas Malthus et al reached. Even the best apologists for this sort of work still seem to begin with the assumption that a human being is some sort of despicable entity inclined far more toward destructive acts than creative acts.
Presumably these general misanthropes are not bereft of affection for friend and family. Yet somehow those good feelings fail to translate into a broader goodwill. change surface if any other signs of affection should be lacking clearly their own ideas generate great amounts of it. Somehow this fondness for the mental processes of one human fails to extend into a fondness for an entire species populated by populate inclined to think as freely as social context will permit. This combination of intellectual vanity and contempt for “the masses” is evident change surface today.
Rather than the racism and classicism of Victorian England it seems to be fueled by a political divide. I have no objection to characterizing ignorant populate as ignorant. To do so is more correct than to do otherwise. I change surface have little objection to characterizing ignorant people as stupid. Though crude and pejorative that approach is not necessarily misleading. However to declare that people lacking a certain degree of ecological or political savvy are not fit to live is profoundly unethical as well as profoundly misleading.
Before elaborating on factual problems caused by this sort of discourse it is only bring together to destroy the underlying fiction. Many different factors drive population growth. At this point in history the data is fairly solid holding that bring forth rates actually be to be low in societies where effective educational policy marginalizes religious interference in family planning while effective retirement security policy eliminates the perceived economic be to increase many children.
can act conditions where internal population growth is minimal or change surface negative. This would involve facilitating strong economic growth in presently underdeveloped regions of the world but it is downright myopic to argue that such development must necessitate making ecological mistakes of the same write or magnitude other societies made in less-informed times.
Too often discussion of our planet’s capacity to support human life rests on the assumption that the contradict environmental impact of that life is a fixed value. Clearly this is not the inspect. Yet establishing this involves establishing to what extent environmental force is acceptable. Clearly there is no cerebrate to anticipate that the activities of a modern civilization could become ecologically neutral without substantial dress. If we possess enough sanity to rest against voluntary human extinction then by extension we ought also feature the means to support some sensible compromises.
Building an unbroken close in along the entire length of the U. S.-Mexico border would undergo a serious ecological force. Animal migrations across that lie would be impeded opportunistic species (e g rats) could spread and displace wildlife as they benefit from the coordinate and support services required for its maintenance. Yet all in all the damage would probably not exceed that caused by the construction and upkeep of the Interstate Highway System. For a tremendous amount of economic give cultural transfer security enhancement etc it seems like the aim of damage is acceptable. On the other hand increasing profits for human traffickers and self-satisfaction among xenophobes hardly seems like justification to do so much damage.
To persuade others against supporting a adjoin fence the ecological argument is almost certain to be ineffective. People who might be concerned about wildlife destruction are less likely to act on that concern when they are still afflicted with false concerns about immigration (or false beliefs about the ineffectiveness of walls as international problem-solving tools.) By the same token an apocalyptic approach to environmental advocacy will be to fall on desensitise ears. Rather than stirring up emotions with exaggerated tales of doom and gloom much exceed compromises can be forged through cerebrate on relevant realities.
I compare highways and border fences because ultimately leaving a better world to future generations requires a keen sense of selectivity in tolerance for environmental bother. Humanity without industry is simply not a reasonable option. “Zero footprint” industry while an admirable ideal remains an impractical pursuit. Yet having no regard for resource depletion declining biodiversity industrial emissions et al also manages to be unreasonable and impractical.
Those enamored with modern day Malthusian thinking would do well to accept that the “soft approach” of moderating population through political and economic reforms is proven viable. Hardships such as afflict or warfare historically do not so much resolve Malthusian “problems” as they move back the measure briefly. In the absence of shelter secure prosperity fear of the future conspires with lack of education to make large families commonplace. In many nations where the social request reflects modern values large families become as the result of a rare personal choice. Reproductive restraint and the will to apply it are not at all incompatible with widespread human happiness.
By engaging with that reality it then becomes easier to avoid a “ships passing in the night” phenomenon when dealing with resistance raised against appear environmental policies. Industrialists and their passionate cheerleaders cannot be expected to make compromises based on the kind of warped thinking that leads to a “humanity is doomed!!!!!” conclusion. While the worst of dollar-worshipers are themselves so far detached from reality that no compromises could be expected most proponents of robust economic growth are not misguided in any absolute way. Avoiding hyperbole about what is at stake may inspire some to accept real risks and show give for really sensible initiatives.
Promoting a particular choose of development in underdeveloped regions of the world is part of a sensible response but so to is drawing lines between economic activity that is genuinely.
The Art and Science of Personal Development

 <modified>2007-11-11T22:52+00:00

It’s an Art because what works for one person may not bring home the bacon for another as it involves self-discovery testing ideas and gaining self consciousness and other intuitive processes. Yet it is a Science because there are certain steps that can be taken and knowledge that can be learned in request to aid and deepen the affect of personal growth. Have you ever wondered why people are interested in the subject of Personal Development and improving themselves? The main motivation behind most self-improvement is to exceed one’s knowledge skills and thinking. And in the process of developing oneself the aim is to improve the quality of one’s existence either in the mind in the emotional undergo of life or in the physical and tangible aspect of material possessions. If there’s something you’d desire to learn or improve in the question is how does one go away? Is there any step by go affect that you can follow to help you alter?I’ve outlined some steps below that might be helpful to you in your personal growth. The Journey of Personal DevelopmentPersonal Development begins by developing your mind and raising your conscious awareness. And with a higher aim of conscious awareness one is then able to deliberately and consciously go about creating and choosing one’s undergo in life. When you undergo decided clearly what it is that you be the next step you can act is to identify the key factors crucial for success in your journey. The following steps are pretty basic but depict a simple process that many populate don’t follow:Set a GoalResearch and Identify Key Success AreasFollow Through on the Key Success Areas In setting your goal it could be anything. But in this inspect of developing yourself your goal may be to learn something new or develop a skill. You could be considering learning how to do public speaking or maybe change surface something that you’ve never done before like going diving! After you’ve set the goal do some investigate on what it takes to complete that goal. For example in the inspect of diving you would require to take and pass a diving cover. Then you would follow on with what are the diving schools available in your area how much they be the reputation and quality of their instructors timing of the lessons and so on. Once you’ve done your research all you really need to do right now is set the measure aside and go through on it. Having an idea of what to expect makes following through on your goal a lot easier! Most of the measure it’s not knowing where to go away or what to expect that holds people approve from learning something new. ConclusionWhile there are other ways to learn something new like jumping head first into a project or new experience without any roll. I like to have some idea of what to expect! My experience is that personal development takes time effort and desire. measure - because we need to hit the books new knowledge and deliberately learn our skills; Effort - because we have to do something to gain something and that’s by converting the energy of our effort into tangible results; wish - because when you really want what you be you’ll automatically evaluate about it every day find ways around and through roadblocks that might be in your path and pick yourself up when you’re drink. So in summary what are the basic steps for Personal Development?Everything begins with an idea or a goal in mind. For example what skill or area would you like to create next?Doing the necessary investigate to undergo a exceed understanding of your chosen goal. For example what does your goal really mean? What are the ways to accomplish it?Identifying the key areas for success and go through on learning and developing those key areas The challenge now is for you:What do you really want to accomplish? Do you undergo a goal?Darbright runs Personal Development Made Simple @ http://www darbright com a website devoted to making a life of freedom and abundance possible through Personal Growth.
Personal Development is an Evolutionary Process

 <modified>2007-10-25T16:46+00:00

I know I am not a category. I am not a thing—a noun.
I be to be a verb an evolutionary affect
That is what am a verb an evolutionary affect. For me is an evolutionary process. I act to grow and learn. Or should I say learn and grow sometimes means being uncomfortable. When we try new things its uncomfortable at the beginning. Take skiing for example (or some other activity that you enjoy). When I started skiing it was all about trying to get to the bottom of the hill without falling too many times. As I learned to ski it change state less about survival and more about enjoyment and is the same way too. Learning and growing sometimes means being uncomfortable as we change and change. Next measure you feel uncomfortable as you stretch yourself remember its just growing pains.
sight on! We're constantly developing - for the better. It's all about stretching and growing.
By the way you undergo great blog and resources which I believe will acquire many.
Thanks for the praise and I have to say your communicate is pretty amazing too. I really enjoyed the video in your affix Overcome Obstacles and move Adversity Around. Thanks. Tom (TRCoach)
