Hello Guys. Just came across this site and love it lots of info and it seems like alot of populate know there stuff around here. so i decided to ask some questions about my personal setup and what would be the BEST option for me I was thinking about setting up a MCE Media Server that has all my media (pics,DVDs movies, videos & music) and add 3 powerful HTPCs for the home theater bet room and family dwell. I currently have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 server that I plan to use as the media server. It has Intel Dual core out Xeon 5050 2x2MB Cache 3.00GHZ processor. 2GB memory. PERC5/i Integrated Controller Card two 80GB hard drive. My main goal is that i be to undergo all the HTPCs to access the server and play movie/music. Also each HTPC will be able to record the Dish schedule and deliver it to the server. Each HTPC can play standard DVD and color ray DVD. My budget is 10K. I want to spend some $ to upgrade the server first get more hard drives (3 - 5 TB) then use the be to create 3 HTPCs. So please let me what do you evaluate it's the best setup. (1) inspect? desktop style not tower need to be mounted in the pace (2)CPU/Memory/Motherboard? (3)Drives storage space ??? (4)Remote control/access to the HTPC (5)Capture Device? (6)Video separate with HDMI output? (7)Audio? (8)Any other cards? (9)OS? (10)HTPC software? Thank you for reading
You are probably going to get a lot of PM's of people trying to help you when you have a calculate that big!
I can tell you alter now that you won't need to spend all of that $10k.
Health insurance inevitably leads to poor quality inefficiency inflated costs for health care and rationing.
There are some good threads on here regarding servers. First thing you need to do is evaluate out what you want to run - Windows domiciliate Server unRAID. Windows Server etc. Here is a good go there are some other good ones as well. Next I would look at your communicate wired 10/100 gigE wireless combination of both... Good luck and have fun!
i'd discuss that you construe by renethx there are a few recommended servers (a couple are rackmount systems) and a variety of HTPC builds analyse it out
Storme. I know I cann't record anything in HD but I've heard you can find a TV tuner separate that can record in SVCD format to preserve Dish to the hard drive. Is that adjust?Hi leftheaded,Thank you so much for the link. I am reading it now it's really helpful.
With a calculate of 10k you could go the R5000 mod route..... then HD is a reality. cater is fully supported...-Brian
Im confused??? Why can't he?He can rip HD movies on his 10TB super highend server. He can use Tivo HD and deliver all his HD content to the 10TB super highend server. I can playback all his HD content over a very very nice HTPC. Is this wrong???btw. 10K is more then I spent on beat HD video and audio distribution (8 rooms).
You are thinking about this create by mental act the do by way too. With that money there is no need to put local devices anywhere you should read about centralizing your sources (HTPCs) and distributing them to all rooms like many of us do. Sharing sources is the exceed design.
penngray,I accept with you an that is what I am planing to do. We are gonna have HAI for the home automation and use NUVO for the audio destruction for non-HT locations. All the equipments will be in one room. I have 3 HD locations: home theater family room and game dwell. Originally. I was going to get the Kaleidescape (dealer quote: one 3u server. 3 movie players total $38K). After I read some the post one this place. I have a second thought why don't I build a server with all the HTPCs to do the same as Kaleidescape. Like I said. All the equipments will be in one room. I ordain have all HTPCs cerebrate to the server then Dish receiver. HTPC connect to the HDMI switcher then to the TV/projector. I will also connect the audio output from the cater receiver and HTPC to my Parasound controller. Am I planing this alter???

If I am not mistaken MCE does not support beat on HTPC's as clients. You will have to use a 360 or wait for the new extenders. An extender ( IMO ) is going to be preferable to a full on HTPC client (provided the extender is quiet and works as advertised). Sagetv does give beat on HTPC clients if that is your preference and they will be offering a new HD extender before xmas. As for HD you could go the OTA route or if you go for sagetv there is give for the cater R5000 mod. J

First of all there's no Tivo HD for dish. If he uses telecommunicate and TivoHD I believe he could copy over some HD programs to his PC with Tivo-to-go (not sure how much of a pain this is) but this doesn't work with encrypted channels (on my cable that includes all the premium movie channels discovery hd and espn). With that kind of budget I'd evaluate about cablecard PC with Xbox360 as media extenders.
but this doesn't work with encrypted channels (on my cable that includes all the premium movie channels discovery hd and espn).
sorry to hijack real quick.. does this convey that i shouldn't even reach trying to record TV in my situation?? 90% of the shows i watch on my comcast cable are the HD movie channels discover HD and ESPN (the other 10% are the major networks in HD) .. if i want to preserve things I have to act their motorola STB (which i can't stand)
and archiving is silly with such a tiny HDD. i keep finding myself deleting stuff I want or simply losing it because another show bumps it off
this is my BIG frustration as an HTPC newb.. all this "what you can and can't preserve to the PC" is hard to determine without basic trial and error.

Since the server dish receivers all 3 HTPCs. HDMI switchers and the Parasound receiver with be in one dwell. Do I be extenders? For the HTPC video output. I intend to do DVI -->HDMI to the HDMI switchers (Dish receiver ordain be also connected to the switcher) then a singel HDMI cabel from each switcher to each location. For the Audio just connect SPDFI output from the HTPC to Parasound.
With that kind of money he should go beyond media extenders and go with beat house A/V solutions. I can play movies from my HTPCs (I undergo two now) in any room without a media extender. I use an Extron matrix switch and I use CQC (home automation software) to control it all. Media extenders are the cheapest route but are very limited in what they can do when you have 10K you are better off doing it right. I did my FULL HOUSE A/V distribution for way under 10K.
I was going to get the Kaleidescape (dealer ingeminate: one 3u server. 3 movie players be $38K). After I construe some the post one this site. I undergo a second thought why don't I create a server with all the HTPCs to do the same as Kaleidescape.
Yeah last year I wanted the same solution for my new home and there was no way I would pay that much just on a DVD playback server.... KScape doesnt even do HD
In the end I have the same movie playback quality and hold back that the Kscape gives for fractions of the price. You should post.
