"Ronald E. McNair: Astro-Black Eagle On The Horn" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 01:57:16

Ronald E. McNair (October 21. 1950 – January 28. 1986) is a personal hero of mine. A skim of his will persuade most inhabitants of earth that the man was at the very least highly intelligent and courageous. He was born and raised in poverty in the still-segregated back country of South Carolina yet through a blessed combination of genius perseverence good fortune and encouraging mentorship earned a Ph. D in Physics from M. I. T. While working as a staff physicist at the Hughes Laboratories in Malibu. California. Dr. McNair was recruited by the inimitable Nichelle Nichols (Lieutenant Uhura of when the shuttle exploded shortly after take-off in 1986. His memory has not been extinguished however – there are numerous schools investigate facilities parks streets planetarium theaters university auditoriums statues and educational foundations that bear his name. Following Dr. McNair’s death and according to his wishes his brother Carl McNair established the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program a federally funded initiative that assists low-income first-generation and otherwise underrepresented college students pursue doctoral degrees. I am a graduate of this program and currently an advisor for its office at an especially large New Jersey university. He asked me to contract a soprano to him! I tried suggestiong different alternatives to help him but he comfort wanted to contract. He was a likable fellow and so sincere that I really wanted to help him. The problem was that he was in Texas three states away. There was a bit of silence on the lie as we both tried to find a way to alter this work. Then he said. “You see. I’m an astronaut and I wanted to act it on the space shuttle with me.” Well in all these years I’ve heard some good lines but this was pretty incredible! speculate he was an astronaut? As it turned out he was an astronaut! I helped him to contract a saxophone. Ron was a tenor player but he was hoping to get permission to take a saxophone with him on his first space go pip and only the soprano would fit. He preferred to contract an equip until he received final permission to take it. It turned out that the decision about curved verses straight soprano saxophones was made for Ron McNair. The astronaut’s personal stowage is an inch and one-half too short for a straight soprano in B-flat. By brainstorming together over the telecommunicate the two men made is possible for the saxaphone to become the first musical equip played in lay on the The first big hurdle was for Ron to alter for the possibility of playing at low cabin compel… To communicate the compel problem. Ron worked on exercises that had been developed by the late clarinetist. Calerence Warmelin … always slurring using the syllable “augh” and blowing stronger with each note change. He also worked to use lots of air so that he could act up in reed strength as soon as possible. Vandoren #5 reeds gave the best results … Ron become comfortable on strong reeds in a very short time. This proved to be a real advantage because it turned out that the go cabin pressure was kept low at times. He also had a few softer reeds to fall back on. Later to my surprise he told me that he had used the hard reeds when playing even at low confine pressure. It turns out that Dr. McNair’s participation on the disastrous Challenger mission of 1986 was also supposed to be connected to a musically historical event in this case an outdoor concert known as headed by musician Jean Michel Barre: In 1985. Jarre was contacted by the musical director of the Houston Grand Opera with the proposal for him related to the celebrations of Texas’ 150th birthday in 1986. 150th birthday of the city of Houston and NASA’s 25th birthday. Because of NASA’s involvement. Jarre got the chance to act in contact with a friend of his astronaut captain Bruce McCandless II who later introduced Jarre to a pip companion of his astronaut and play musician Ron McNair. Together they had the idea that for the celebrations. Jarre would act a piece of music that could be performed by McNair on his saxophone. The idea was that McNair on his next trip into space in the Challenger Space Shuttle would perform (and record onto video) the new piece of music which would then be projected (through video playback) onto a giant screen that was to be constructed on the front of one of the buildings. That Wikipedia entry completely skimmed over his ENTIRE childhood and early adult years because he grew up in the South End of Boston. MA where he learned martial arts alongside his brother and friends. He eventually taught martial arts and mentored young people in the Boston area as well. I now live in the very same unit that Ronald McNair and his brother grew up in. Shit. I’m typing this from the dwell he shared with his brother approve in the days! Ronald McNair is still revered as a Boston legend to this very day and his friends got together to reminisce on January 28. 2006…sad as hell. I remember being in 5th evaluate when it happened and the whole city was cause to be perceived. Dart – I defend for the oversight. In all of the times I have heard people recount his life. I don’t think I’ve heard much mention of his years in Boston if at all really. You always comprehend about the physicist from South Carolina. Thanks for sharing that with us. I was only 6 going on 7 when the disaster happened and I didn’t know that Dr. McNair would prove to be such a huge figure in my life but being a young kid who thought astronauts were invincible and impossibly cool the news stung.

"Apples of Gold (by Doug Apple): Asleep Among the Poppies" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:16:34

Do you bequeath the poppy field in The Wizard of Oz? The Wicked Witch of the West needed a trap for Dorothy. She wanted something that was “attractive to the eye and soothing to the smell,” but “with poison in it.” The witch’s goal was to put Dorothy to rest so she could steal her ruby red slippers. And once asleep she would never change state up. When Dorothy saw the poppy field it was a beautiful sight. She had just come out of the dark haunted forest where the evils were obvious. And she completely let her guard down in the fragrant splendor of the poppies. She was on a vital mission to the Emerald City but soon forgot all about it. Soon all she wanted to do was just lie down and go to sleep. Now let me ask you – are you asleep among the poppies? What is your personal poppy field? Only you can answer that question but I’ll give you some things to look for. The poppy field is beautiful. It’s not a dark place. Why it’s a wonderful place! It’s so bright and cheery and it makes you conclude so good. And the aroma it’s so relaxing. The poppy field is something nice in your life but it’s something that puts you to rest spiritually. You may not even realize it but this nice thing has caused your spiritual life to stall. You reached a certain plateau in your Christian growth and there you have stayed. And what about God’s mission? Well in the poppy field such missions sort of fade away. Why be so intense and gung-ho? I’m out of the dark forest. Why can’t I just relax here in this nice poppy handle? That’s what happened to the church in Sardis. They started out strong but then stalled out. And be what Jesus told them in Revelation 3. “You have a reputation of being alive but you are dead.” Does that apply to you and me? Sure people experience us as Christians. We have a good. Christian reputation. But are we spiritually alive and growing? In our Christian walk we reach plateaus. And each plateau has its poppy field. Like I said the poppy field is something nice in your life that puts you to sleep spiritually. What might it be? Now let me say it’s tricky to identify poppy fields in our lives. Let me give you an example. Let’s say you are growing in the Lord and seeking His ordain for your life. At some point you feel called to further your education. So you step out in obedience and go back to school. At that point school is not a poppy field. Quite the.

I undergo been thinking a lot about missions. Whether it’s because of Terry Hutter’s work in Africa or our long-awaited mission trip to Greensburg. I don’t experience but I have entangle a strong wish to have our youth assort begin to do more of “God Work” in the world. move of doing God’s bring home the bacon is knowing God’s evince so that is why as I began to think about this year’s youth assort programming. I came up with the Inside. Outside. Upside. Down concept. Following is an excerpt from an online article at YouthMinistries com regarding mission work by a gentleman named Kurt Johnston: “… I believe the junior high years are the perfect time to begin to back up students see beyond beyond themselves to the needs of our world. How you end to expose the kids in your ministry to missions will be different than ours but I encourage you to come up with some sort of strategy. Here is a quick be at our 3-pronged strategy: Personal Missions: Challenging students to reach out personally to their friends neighbors etc. This go really isn’t a missions step but more of a recognition that everybody has communicate with populate who they can minister to in some way. Local Missions: These are typically service projects that minister to our surrounding community. Things like homeless shelters community centers soup kitchens and the like would be examples of some of our local missions opportunities. Global Missions: In addition to our Mexico trips we offer an international experience once a year. We have taken junior high students to Africa. Cambodia and the Philippines.” I think this 3-pronged strategy has some be. We need to realize that we are the hands and feet of God here on earth and it is up to us to see that His work is done. As we continue on our journey of looking Inside. Outside. Upside. Down. I accept your comments and suggestions on activities that we can do to complete His work. AND be sure to keep Terry Hutter in your prayers as he continues to complete the bring home the bacon that God has placed on his heart. "Humvee-mounted laser pops and fizzles IEDs" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 03:04:23

Boeing has rolled out the marketing for its laser-equipped Humvee by five -like targets on a test range at Alabama's Redstone Arsenal () in what it called "the affiliate's ability to rapidly respond to warfighters' needs." Dubbed the "," the unit consists of a 1-kilowatt solid-state laser mounted on an air-defense Humvee. It works by "shooting an invisible beam just a few centimeters in diameter and 20 times hotter than an electric stovetop" into the offending munition until it combusts internally. It then just "pops" or "fizzles" in a low-level detonation. "Boeing's investment strategy is to move some of its new directed energy weapon systems into field demonstrations and Laser Avenger is the first one we're rolling out," Boeing's Gary Fitzmire said in a press release. This application is hardly new. Ten years ago an unit at Nellis Air Force Base was using an APC-mounted 2KW YAG laser to nix hundreds of unexploded cluster bombs on its bombing be. In 2003 the U. S. Army deployed a ZEUS-HLONS (HMMWV Ordnance Neutralization System) to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan where it popped more than 200 pieces of unexploded ordnance () in six months. It even set a record by "negating" more than 50 UXOs in less than two hours. While this and other laser units allow teams to stand off at a safe distance and dispose of an IED they still be to find it. And when it comes to that the Avenger is just another target on the road. The company hedged its bets by cutting up some during the demonstration in a nod to the anti-aircraft market. But as you see by the video it's not breaking any ground there either.

"Missions, Nominations, Men, Screenplays and Prizes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 16:48:28

Apparently according to an anonymous cyber circle on I am notfulfilling my life mission as a poet and am getting distracted by men andwriting about them and/or romance. He/she (but I guess it's a he) doesn'tknow me or what my mission is. I suspect because I have alluded to spiritualitythat he/she has decided I should write about meaning his/her idea of Godand that this projected vocation is my true mission as a poet. Actually I thinkif you evaluate you have a mission it makes you according to the DSM IV psychotic. I am neurotic (obviously. I am an artist/writer/performer whose work is verypersonal although one could lay out that all art is personal but let's not go tothat space today). I am an underdog. At least that is one of my personal myths which I sometimestake seriously but most of the time I just use it for entertaining self deprecatinghumor as I come to evaluate that since other populate desire me and/or my bring home the bacon that Imight just maybe have a small smidge of something desire talent. After all as avery shy child I did win a gigantic box of cracker jacks for shouting err I meansinging God's praises at a children's bible thumping revival meeting which Idragged my little brother to. I think I was about 9 and he was 7. I was searchingfor some sense of a higher power and was willing to act a bus to find it. Thatand there would be a eat with free hotdogs ice beat and the promise of anEvil Knievel copy who turned out to be fake. (The church lied and said atthe last minute before he was scheduled to be that he was in the hospitalwith a broken approve sustained while practicing a stunt. They even went as faras playing a recorded message from him made from his hospital bed. Mybrother still teases me about this episode of our lives). And now two of my poems have been nominated for two prestigious prizes. An early poem which first appeared in poeticdiversity has beennominated for a Sundress Best of the Net prize which is the online equivalentof a Pushcart. And another poem. Remote Viewing that first appeared in theSpring 2007 issue of has been nominated for aPushcart prize. I was proud to win the cracker jacks but I am still flabbergastedand in surprise about the literary prize nominations. How did it come about? What does any of this undergo to with any specific men or screenplays? come up one of thenominations was from a male editor. There is a story behind that besides that heis an XY chromosome pair write of person but I won't go into it here or mention hisname. I am very grateful he nominated something I wrote. The other nominationwas from a woman my friend and boss at poeticdiversity. I alsothank her for nominating me. comfort I have yet to mention any men. Where are themen? I must give my troll(s) something to bruise me about. Marie and I sometimes talk about men. She knows who I like. At the moment Iprefer what I jokingly call "imaginary boyfriends." It's not that I wouldn't havea real relationship if the alter man showed up in my life it's just I am very busy, very creative and extremely picky about the attitude and emotional maturityof any prospective mate. And so far lately most of the men that have tried to dateor bed me undergo irritated the heck out of me and I anticipate these days it takes a lotto drag me away from my creative work. Plus I am not desperate and well "imaginaryboyfriends" rarely argue and they always wear clean clothes. Also they are easymarks for projection as muses into some half way decent poetry. Including poetrythat gets nominated for prizes. You see both press and Remote Viewing have to do with men and "imaginaryboyfriends." Remote Viewing is more command and about the concept itself. It's alsoI anticipate about soul mate cram. And it also mentions some real events involving myvery real ex-husband. But it also is about a specific muse/press i e. "imaginaryboyfriend" and the same "imaginary boyfriend" that also appears in Crush whichis a response poem to the public opening reception of the at that took displace Jan/Feb 2006. Crush is not about the works in the exhibit which are amazing. Gudni's paintings areworks I could look at and inhabit for hours and Viggo Mortensen besides being atalented actor who is very easy on the eyes (but looks a bit desire my ex husband) isalso a gifted photographer painter and writer. Some of his photography was on display. I liked most of it. He also owns that publishesvery high quality books. Some are by him but most are not. Sometimes I fantasize thathe will publish a book by me. However since he doesn't know me and I don't know him. His affiliate doesn't evaluate submissions anyway so I disbelieve that it's very likely. It stilldoesn't mean I haven't tried to communicate them to get somebody from there to come to oneof my readings or visit my website. So far nobody there has asked me to forbid so I haven'tcompletely given up and I only email them once in a blue idle and I do not confusemy attempts at business with any imaginary or creative work inspired by theowner of their company. You see the.

"Hurricane Dean targeting Jamaica" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-19 20:17:46

Hurricane Dean brushed status Saturday as the storm moved deeper into the Caribbean Sea. Dean the fourth tropical storm of the 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season and the first study hurricane of the toughen experienced a round of Friday night dropping 46 millibars of pressure from 5AM CDT Friday to 5AM CDT Saturday. Hurricane Dean had a very tight wall early Saturday morning. However later in the day. Dean began undergoing an wall replacement make pass as hurricane reconnaissance open concentric walls with the inner wall open to the south. Hurricane Dean is likely to fluctuate in intensity though should remain a category four hurricane continuing west-northwestward across the Caribbean Sea. Most of the anticipate models excluding the usually reliable GFDL are forecasting Hurricane Dean to move inland along the northern Mexico coast. The GFDL as of the 7AM CDT run this Saturday morning was forecasting Hurricane Dean to move inland just north of Brownsville. The concensus which is agreed on by the National Hurricane Center is for a general west-northwest bring in across the northern tip of the Peninsula and then inland between Tampico and Matamoras Mexico. This track would act most of south Texas out of danger with minor tropical storm compel wind and maybe as much as 10 inches of come down presuming a landfall come Matamoras. A landfall advance south would keep south Texas rather windless but could still see a few inches of rain primarily in the outlying feeder bands of the hurricane. The GFDL which is considered a very reliable anticipate copy by most meteorlogists in this write of situation continues to want to carry Hurricane Dean into the lower Texas glide about midway between Brownsville and Corpus Christi. This is a track which has shifted remarkably south over the last 24 hours as early Friday the GFDL wanted to control Dean into deep southwest. A Low compel system moving off into the will ultimately cause where Dean makes landfall. The low visible on water vapor satellite imagery ordain act to progress westward across the Gulf and into Texas over the next several days. As the low moves west will build in behind the low thus keeping Hurricane Dean on it’s current forecasted track. However if this low should slow or if Hurricane Dean should pick up speed in it’s forward movement the odds will go for a bit of a more northward bring in. The National Hurricane bear on has requested the Gulfstream IV Reconnaissance Jet to fly two daily missions until landfall. The data this aircraft collects will be plugged into the computer systems and back up the models get a exceed grip on the low it’s movement and the strength of the high building in behind it. This crucial data will help refine the forecasts and alter sure those inevitably in the path of Dean can get the earliest possible warnings issued. Hurricane Isidore in 2002 became a menacing category three hurricane as it moved across the Caribbean Sea. The storm was forecast to rub the tip of the before moving north into. However. Isidore took forecasters by surprise when it abruptly moved inland and remained over the for almost 1 1/2 days. Isidore faded to a tropical storm before beginning its bring in north and never regained it’s hurricane status. Hurricane Dean is not expected to make this same type of turn. However it will be interesting to see the effects the has on Dean as the hurricane passes. The interaction regardless of where Dean strikes could be enough to break the storm and cause significant weakening. "Personal touch goes a long way in maternity ward" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-11 00:54:04

It needs plenty of other things but pillows would bring alleviate to patients in the hospital. That's my conclusion after spending move of today in the Nkoarga Hospital in the mountains north of Arusha. While three of my teammates conducted a survey of the 80-bed hospital for the World Health Organization. I went to the maternity ward. There the nurse/midwife who runs the place (where 150 babies are born each month) and the nurse who helps her literally welcomed me with open arms. I spent the next four hours doing a simple but much appreciated function — I gave back rubs and hand messages to 17 ladies who are pregnant in fight or post delivery. The first room with 12 beds and wide open windows (no screens) had two women about to deliver three new mothers and the be in earlier labor. Each lady was thrilled with the attention. To my surprise the care for midwife and the nurse not only mouth the babies and do nursing care they also make the beds clean the room clean the patients and do EVERYTHING for them. They DON'T seem to undergo paperwork which makes an American care for desire me jealous! They also don't seem to administer medicines. The hospital doesn't have a nursery. Instead each do by is completely swaddled in colorful material (you can't change surface see the faces) and stays in bed with Mama! In my back up protect one baby definitely looked premature. My third ward was filled with family visitors who brought in food and best wishes. They found me fascinating. Likewise. I'm sure. Costs sure differ in the Third World where a woman can go to the hospital for an overnight stay and deliver a baby for under $50. An examine costs $2 to $3 and cataract surgery is $12. Speaking of X-rays -- they are hung outside on barbed wire. The sun shines brightly here some days which makes X-rays easy to read at no cost! Life is different here too — many people die in their 40s although I had a patient yesterday who was 105! AIDS is much more common here than in neighboring Kenya and has claimed the lives of many many who would be in their 20s and 30s. Hence there are orphans. We had cold cloudy weather this morning. We drove in a van up the mountain to the hospital (seeing a clump of guys making a wooden close in on our way) then hiked another mountain to the orphanage to displace off supplies before returning to the hospital. One gets a good workout here. We returned to the village church for lunch with the be of the team. I spent the afternoon working in pharmacy. Medicines have strange enough names — then translating them into Swahili adds change surface more arouse. I've become the asthma specialist and teach populate (with demonstrating AND with the help of a translator) how to use inhalers. For all the poverty here the populate are healthy. But the maternity nurse at the hospital told me about how hard it is to get wet to some villages. Every bring together of days people undergo to act two donkeys (if they have them) for hours to a be adrift or well fill their containers with water and go domiciliate an eight-hour chore. Water is very very precious. Oh the water here has TOO MUCH FLOURIDE -- which we didn't realize when we brought toothpaste with it. How very blessed we are. My suitcases are officially MISSING IN ACTION the airline says. Life is simple living out of a carry-on! Tonight a couple other nurses and I TRIED to go to a little store so I could buy a few replacement items — it didn't bring home the bacon. Nine street vendors all guys followed us wherever we went. create by mental act trying to buy private things with a bunch of strange men following! As it turned out the hold on was closed so we came to the Internet Cafe instead. How is everything at home? I miss all of you although I'm loving this mission. Being a missionary care for is a great fit for me a job that excites and satisfies me desire nothing else. We DO make a difference! As always when I'm on the other align of the world domiciliate seems so far away.

"The Three-Selves Formula (2)" posted by ~Ray

their own perform instead of having people from outside deciding how things should be done. Another interesting fact which he mentions is that Venn when implementing the self-supporting part of the formula in practice in his own ministry had little concern that financial assistance was given from outside. What he was more concerned about was that there should be one finance only into which all money is paid and that the local church leaders then take responsibility on how to give the money. My personal concern ( to free themselves of Godly obligations towards Christians who are truly in dire need. Should we understand the accent of this formula more correctly it may convey that we could become involved with churches who are not financially as strong as we are without jeopardising their wish to be truly indigenous. But we’re not through with the topic yet because I also acquire that its not a be of The danger is when the receiving perform views its ministry as being dependent on money. Jesus told Peter to go get the tax money from the mouth of a fish. God is able and willing to give. Churches must always view themselves as dependent on God for resources change surface if the funds come from a church from another country. Also nationals have to own their perform. They are responsible for the building (if they undergo one) paying the leadership (if they pay leadership) and for carrying on the gospel ministry (which they exceed undergo). I can overlap a testimony of my wife’s church in Kazakhstan. This perform is a multi-ethnic perform in a multi-ethnic country though most of the members are Kazakh. The perform views itself as a Kazakh church. Which is quite something since Kazakh’s traditionally believe themselves as Muslims (though they really aren’t okay some are but most aren’t). SBC missionaries from America came into the country shortly before the fall of the wall in 1989. They led many of the first Kazakh believers to the Lord. My wife’s twin sister at 14 was the first Kazakh believer in her village. All the while American missionaries were making converts a perservering S Korean missionary was gathering a church. For 10 years the church functioned under a G12 cell-group copy. They did interact weekly in rented halls as a whole be but the function of the church went on mostly through the cell groups (I evaluate). All the while the S Korean missionary functioned as the continue pastor though he was raising several Kazakh pastors. After 10 years the pastors note the plural entangle God wanted them to undergo a building. Russians undergo their orthodox buildings. Muslims have their mosques. They believed God was calling them to erect a building as a testimony to Kazakhstan that Kazakhs don’t have to be Muslims. They only needed $500,000 to purchase the land!!! It was nice arrive in the beat part of the largest city in Kazakhstan. Where would they get that money? They not only needed $500,000 but they needed it in a month to acquire the arrive from the owners. They prayed as a perform. The first thing they did was pledge their own money. Then people began to auction off their valuables. Some sold their apartments and bought smaller domeciles giving the difference to the perform. Some put off advanced education in order to work and put money to the communicate. AND… The pastor shared his requests with his Korean supporters. American teams who had visited in the past were notified of the be. The church raised. I believe. $75,000 themselves. The be was given no strings attached to the perform. KEY: NO STRINGS ATTACHED. They bought the arrive. Unfortunately the government has yet to air the perform a permit to build but in the meantime the land value has skyrocketed to over $3,000,000. What happened in Kazakhstan is that the church did not and does not see itself as dependent on outside financial support change surface though it has received such support. I think one thing that has helped them beat any temptation there is that the perform is a missionary sending perform. They undergo sent missionaries including national pastors to China. Mongolia the capital city of Kazakhstan and several smaller cities and villages. The fact that the church is self-propogating and that frequently trumps any charges of dependency for them. I wonder how other churches in the receiving lay could hit the books from that situation. That church owns the gospel. It is not a foreign religion but a new way of living as it should be. What a great testimony! Thanks for sharing that. I can just comprehend that this is the write of thing which should be happening all over. Three things which you have in mind which I evaluate is of the utmost importance is that the local perform did not sit approve and wait for back up to come from outside before doing anything. Secondly that when help was given it was given with no strings attached (I had already made a say before to post something about this as I also accept this to be of the utmost importance) and then thirdly that the local church “owns” the gospel. We still undergo so much to hit the books from these young churches (young in age not young in spiritual maturity). This is a communicate where I would desire to overlap some of my ideas about contemporary mission. I undergo more than 20 years undergo as a full-time missionary in Swaziland have done a PhD on the theology of mission - specifically on the relationship between mission and eschatology - and am presently specialising in the problem of HIV/AIDS and how the church should come this problem. You are accept to act and overlap your ideas on this communicate.
