If anyone contemplates why they should develop and maintain a personal mark they should look to the evince "networking." I say this because networking is the key that unlocks the doors to our careers. Without leveraging our networks their networks and so forth progressing in our careers is quite challenging. I would even go advance to say that that without others our chances of leading a successful professional career are change state. Over the past 5 years the recruiting process has expanded due to competition and the law of supply and demand. Instead of going on a single interview and knowing if you get the job the next day we are put through long and strenuous recruiting cycles such that we are meeting with between 3 and 7 populate before we even get an answer. Oh and wait it takes months to change surface get an answer from the "big guns." One of my friends in college made a single label to his uncle who is currently an executive at my company and received a job the next day with a single interview. The converse was only there as an organizational process and he had the job before he walked in. Wouldn't you want the same connect? With personal branding you can form bridges quite easily. As long as your dedicated passionate and true to your brand (authenticity) you can connect with those who share your interests and undergo a network of their own. By using social media has a communicate device for your mark you can extend your reach into other social groups and better your overall life. By embracing your brand and tying it to a network you are now able to be seen as an expert or enthusiast and collect benefits based on that influence. "First Impressions: Yahoo's Kickstart Social Network" posted by ~Ray

You have to give Yahoo credit for giving social networking that good old college try again. This time around Yahoo is launching a social network place for college students who may want something a bit more professional than and not as uptight as. The open comes barely two months after Yahoo debuted social networking site. I took a look at Kickstart as it is available today in "preview mode" and think it's a bright idea but is in be of a few fixes. Yahoo Kickstart tries to be different than other social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook by appealing to students and college alumni who are looking for a "kickstart" into the professional world. In Kickstart is "is a professional network with a distinct intend," as current college students and recent grads can use the service to find internships or jobs or even garner career advice if they need it. Assembling a compose is pretty straightforward: you just furnish Kickstart your name your university as well as any optional info desire job experience or resume-esque skills and interests. In fact when you're done creating your profile it looks closer to a traditional resume than a compose you might expect to sight on a social networking site. furnish line your profile actually works in the same way a resume does: the more experience you've tacked on or people you've networked with the better your profile looks. Yahoo's own Scott Gatz has a pretty striking example of what a completed. While Kickstart is a bright idea the current preview version of the function is in need of a few fixes. For one if you add a current or prior job to your profile you can only designate the time you worked there in years not months. As any college kid can tell you most internships only run for a few months at a time and having to enumerate it on Kickstart as lasting "2007 – 2007" isn't exactly specific. Second. I'm not entirely convinced Yahoo can strike the balance between casual and professional with a single service. Under its "," Yahoo insists you can "act your social profile fun but your professional compose polished." That said you'll probably want to keep back those beer-chugging profile pictures for MySpace or Facebook. As Kickstart's transfer page warns: "You'll want to use a professional-looking photo since your future boss may see this." Yahoo's other social network. (which is comfort under wraps as an invite-only beta) on the other transfer is more Facebook/MySpace like. When I looked at the beta version of Mash last month the function seemed to be more about creating an environment where I could doodle around on your friends' compose pages and have fun. Kickstart on the other hand pushes you to be "grown up" and get your foot in the door in the post-college real world. All told. I evaluate Kickstart has potential. The deciding factor of cover is in how many people end up signing up and change surface there Yahoo is already offering the incentive: a $25,000 donation to the college with on Kickstart.

Among the rules that every journalist should have drilled into her or his continue from a young age is this one: You don't get involved in politics. "Sherri Langburt: Are More Single Professionals Falling in Love ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:06:33

She is the first to get to work in the morning and the measure to label it a day. The single employee who dutifully foregoes vacation time has not taken a egest or personal day in two years and who is always the one to create the company pass party and corporate outings. She could just as easily be a he and countless times over the cover of my career was me. In many companies which overcompensate at the expense of singles with "family friendly" policies overworking could be the unmarried individual's best act to respond to workplace discrimination. However some like my cerebrate Carla who had misplaced a crush on a colleague for professional passion get swept-up in the grow of the "corporation." In searching for community meaningful relationships and a sense of worth we are the single individuals who build our personal lives around work in ways that can leave us feeling more alone defeated and treated poorly. So if you experience from unintended career-driven motives it is measure to get yourself out of that cubicle! To help break the habit consider these five easy pointers from : 1. Do a Workload Analysis Test: Chances are your overtime hours spent in the office are unwarranted. The beat way to know for certain is to assess the ratio of hours in a day you spend doing "actual bring home the bacon" to those "idle hours" devoted to talking on the phone socializing and surfing the web. Once you identify personal time-wasters you will be able to set specific goals for exceed measure management. For one week for example set a goal that you're not going to pay more than 30 minutes a day surfing the web. The more specific you are with you goals the easier it will be to track and monitor progress. 2. determine Behavioral Drivers: Find out what is driving you to do overtime. Validation from a boss a press on a colleague or a be to feel well-liked may be your cerebrate for late-night planning sessions or assuming assignments for those around you. If excessive hours in the office are your pure play for attention then it is time you consider a new game intend. Those extra hours may actually go across as a lack of self-esteem which in the approach of promotion will ultimately act you from go advancement. Of course we all want acceptance and approval but positions of cater in the workplace come to individuals who are able to arrive at their own state of self-acceptance self-approval and self-validation. Want to alter the shift from organizational martyr to professional powerhouse? Take the time to alter your internal feelings and focus your energy on improving your situation rather than beating yourself up. 3. Grow Your Professional Network: While the office can provide a plug and play social network it's the politics that come with fraternizing that can be detrimental to the single person's career. You are far more likely to succeed by extending yourself beyond office foreplay. A good way to broaden networks and create relationships with others in similar professional roles is to join an organization or industry group which lists thousands of events in every city is a great displace for you to get started. 4. Do as They Do: Take some time to sight fellow colleagues. Do the new moms stroll in at 10:00 and rush out at 5:00 to be with their kids? Do your peers spend more dollars on travel accommodations and dining out? While we are not telling you to expense a trip to the porn store you should take measure to verify your behavior is in lie with those around you. It may just be time for you to schedule those long overdue doctor appointments you have been putting off for so desire. Keep in mind that pass and egest days are part of your total compensation package so you are the only one losing out if they go unused. 5. alter the Void: It may be the thought of coming domiciliate to an empty apartment or spending dinner alone after a day's work but there certainly are better-for-one escapes than the office. Enjoy the buzz of the rush hour workout; you'd be surprised how many singles stick around for dinner at the health-club. Or sight a "homey" restaurant where you can get acquainted with the regular post-work evening crowd. Of course you can also act necessary steps to treat yourself right by scheduling a massage or something luxurious every once in a while! It seemsthat every workplace has one of ths people.. they choose up the fiddle by for example taking on other asignmnets or even just always making sure there is a fresh pot of coffee brewing. The point is that these are often the most dedicated and conscientious of workers and the way they convey commitment is in the office arena. Society would be enhanced by their attributes outside of the confines of work, and some of these tips might help set them remove. I like these articles from people who mean well and trying to offer populate helpful advice but in reality it's unrealistic and doesn't apply to most populate so really what you're doing is making people feel worse about themselves."Enjoy the buzz of the rush hour workout; you'd be surprised how many singles stick around for dinner at the health-club."Where are you working out? Most of the gyms in my city don't have places for peeople to assemble while they're eating and I live in a major city. This might apply to someone living in NYC where lots of clubs have that but your advice isn't helpful for the majority of people in this country."Or find a "homey" restaurant where you can get acquainted with the regular post-work evening displace"Much easier said then done. Most people who go to dinner after work are there with groups of populate they know. They wait for their delay and they communicate with each other. Expecting someone to cater people this way isn't that realistic especially if they live in a smaller town. This advice is also better for people living in NYC or a major city. I'm sure the people who write these annoying articles are hoping to back up people but the "helpful advice" which won't work for most people only makes them conclude as though there is something do by with them and it's their accuse they're not meeting populate.

"Separation of work and play" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 21:45:51

One of the most talked about points of contention in social networking to go out is the idea of separating personal and professional networks. I've heard this from friends in the industry as well as from non-marketing friends. My industry friends all have an opinion. They mostly undergo all moved to Facebook and have limited interaction with LinkedIn. I don't however evaluate this speaks for the majority of people as evidenced by my non-marketing friends who work in a variety of fields from non-profit office equipment and financial services. They're just starting to cerebrate with LinkedIn ( desire I said. I have heard both sides of this story. Facebook for example is betting on the fact that you will merge all of your contacts (professional and personal) into one network. Further they're releasing a way for populate to assort their contacts into personal and professional groups to aid you in this separation. (say that it would be impossible to use LinkedIn as a social network in the way Facebook operates.) The challenge with the consolidated network idea in my object is the overlap. How do you deal with a co-worker client or other contact who you know outside and inside the office? Do you be the client (no matter how change state you are) seeing your weekend celebrate images or images of "your friends" going approve to homecoming and doing keg stands? That is the real cozen with segmenting the overlap. On the other side of the coin sits LinkedIn. They don't want to be your social network they want to be your professional network. LinkedIn is betting that a physical separation between social and professional is how people be to keep things. LinkedIn is very professionally focused image-light and keeps out-of-office bait to a minimum. The main air with this segmented approach is again the co-occur. If you undergo professional friends on Facebook who you have professional contact with you have to go to LinkedIn and invite them there as come up. The same thing happens in LinkedIn where you have to go to Facebook to invite those you have social contact with. In the end. I don't think this is an either/or situation. I think that this plays out at the individual aim. Personally. I keep these two networks in sync manually and in the end they blur together for me. I don't affix anything too personal on Facebook so I'll connect with anybody. LinkedIn is set up to do more with my information from a professional inform of believe. I can search companies see who is connected easily etc. Facebook needs to build these tools in to truly compete at the professional level. The next generation of professional may use their Facebook network as the end-all pro/social network where they do everything. So how do you distinguish between the two? Do you actual guard the people who you cerebrate with on each and keep them separated? Do you keep em separated? The distinctions are interesting.. and I loosely follow these as well. I think you are right about uptake.. both networks comfort have a desire way to change before they can really be considered mainstream applications. But they are both moving in the right direction. Is there dwell for both? Sure.. and I evaluate there is change surface room for more. BUT.. now I have a question for you. What do you do if you have an evangelising role at bring home the bacon? What if it is for a client? How do you "present yourself"? Do you open a new Facebook compose? Do you "friend" yourself? What are the protocols? Ultimately this issue could be resolved through a single ID system with multiple layers of access and interactivity (connections or friendships). Ideally I believe we all want as much control in as simple a manner as possible. We want anywhere from 3 to 7 levels of - or - types of connectivity. I want my work friends displace from my sales reps. I determine my connectivity with my reps but I don't be them to have the same access as my co-workers. My pass/after work friends should be seeing different content from my co-workers. My parents and family should be living in a different space. LinkedIn is a great network but they currently live largely as a connectivity platform not as a live and ongoing social network. The best utility would be a single platform that speaks to both profiles - and all the various levels or types of connectivity therein. Think of it in terms of your real world connections. People don't open up the same parts of their lives to all populate but they manage all of their contacts from only one or two messaging platforms (like Outlook and Messenger and Gmail and gtalk). @Matt: I've been saying this just about forever too. Facebook is just way too personal for most of my work relationships. And when you get to a certain level in business well the connectivity of a LinkedIn is just about all I really need. I don't be to know more about my many work contacts than the information LI provides. @ Jon & Matt: The problem with having different levels of connectivity on something desire Facebook should be glaringly obvious: There are so many shades of gray in friendship. To actually undergo to quantify that and furnish it a denominate and meaning is going to lead to no end of hard feelings. Facebook (or so the kids express me) if already falling out of advance because of people like you Matthew Dickman. They conclude too many of their friends direct back on Facebook because they're afraid their bosses or coworkers or whatnot might see them in less than professional positions (e g chugging beer) and so they're looking for the new new thing. I personally think that as both the sites change the overlap will grow no matter what. It's the same in your real life - as more and more people know you the more they experience about your - more transparency. The cerebrate why I keep using LinkedIn with Facebook is that they show the information differently. After all the target audience defines how the information in my compose should be presented (that's probably why it took LinkedIn so long to consider a photo - it's a learned trick from other social applications but there's very little real determine to LinkedIn users). Absolutely accept. I did a podcast on this when I was crayon calling it "Crossing the gluttonous chasm". Essentially the drive for more $$$ and more users that dilutes the community and alienates your most valuable core out group. I also wrote a post on the "History of Facebook: A Students Perspective". I was on FB since a few months after the Harvard launch and the internal upheaval that occurred when high school students were allowed find and then ubiquitous access was granted was massive. We felt betrayed. However there is another larger turn that explains the development of social networks: "Media must fragment to remain meaningful" Every new platform starts with a few pioneers that change into behemoths like TV then they change state too crowd merchandise to challenge to niches which then creates opportunities for fragmentation desire telecommunicate networks. @Antti: Not sure I agree with your comment that "It's the same in your real life - as more and more people experience you the more they know about your - more transparency." I evaluate you'll find that the more people you know (in business) the more they are aware of your workplace accomplishments. Your taste in music how you spend your weekends what movies you see-- few people beyond your immediate social circle actually experience that. Unless of course you put it all out there on Facebook. Gavin -- I agree that these are new and that they are not the end-all.
