"Single Sign-On beyond the firewall" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:16:16

It seems like only yesterday that developers were coming to grips with implementing hit Sign-On (SSO) across the enterprise. Now organizations are concerned with how they can extend that thinking to beyond the corporate firewall. John Dunn wrote about the basic tenants of Federated Identity Management (FIM) in a : The first thing to say about FIM is that it is not really a technology as such – despite what some vendors will appear to claim - more a concept for understanding how technologies such as web services can be used to make possible a goal that has started to obsess forward-thinking IT die-hards: how can users at different organisations share or ‘federate’ data and conduct transactions using each other’s networks? SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) 2.0 is the standard endorsed by to facilitate SSO in FIM. John discusses three important SAML features that make it appropriate for FIM projects: First it requires no ongoing synchronisation and sets up connections on the basis of a particular request at a particular moment in time. This makes it simple and auditable. Second it allows the communication of privacy settings and manages sessions exceed once the person has logged out of a federated resource. Perhaps most critically it is an abstraction layer that can unite otherwise different authentication systems from different vendors something that has thus far tended to cause a mountain of problems for FIM projects. John then discusses a checklist of issues for companies starting to investigate FIM. These consider: Longer call it has the potential to transform even the humblest IT operation into something quite new. But as a concept federation surely represents the future of networks so that they become not as islands of digital power but overlapping ‘networks of networks’. It is happening already. But it will force companies to re-examine their own security processes before they jump into its whirlpool of potential difficulties.

"Windows Live FolderShare" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 21:40:57

I just came across a today on LiveSide that talks about some of the problems faced by users of. I undergo to be honest even though FolderShare appears to be part of Windows Live. I haven't heard much about it. It's not advertised on and hasn't been talked about much by any of the Windows Live bloggers. FolderShare allows you to adjust files across multiple computers and access or share files with colleagues and friends. You no longer need to send large files via email burn them to CDs/DVDs and mail them or transfer them to a website. FolderShare allows you to overlap and adjust important information instantly with anyone you arouse making it the ameliorate solution for personal or small business use. FolderShare allows you to share with other people sync folders between your own computers and remotely find your files via a web browser. What that really means is that FolderShare allows you to securely keep files synchronized between your devices share files and remotely transfer files from any web browser. It consists of two pieces: My FolderShare and FolderShare Satellite. My FolderShare is the web-based align of the service and allows you to: What is interesting about FolderShare are it's similarities and differences to the function. The biggest noticeable difference is the user interface. Windows Live SkyDrive features the Windows be UI while FolderShare comfort sports a very utilitarian interface that leaves much to be desired. The other big difference is that FolderShare automatically shares all of your local hard drives through the obtain My FolderShare site while SkyDrive only shares files that you explicitly transfer. I would really like to see FolderShare and SkyDrive merged together where I can have a single sign-on experience (right now you comfort undergo to register on FolderShare separately) using my Windows Live ID and have the Personal folders in SkyDrive actually use the FolderShare Satellite services. Then if I share a folder I have the ability to overlap it securely (the SkyDrive Shared folders) or publicly (SkyDrive Public folders). Additionally since FolderShare already requires a client component it would be great to undergo some additional options in the Windows register Sharing dialog box. While we're at it the default public folder that is created when you setup your SkyDrive account should reflect the Windows Public folder by fail as well. I experience the FolderShare team is working on a lot of improvements that will be seen over the next few months mostly centered around the UI. I wish that those changes ordain also see a tighter integration with the rest of the Windows be services and specifically with SkyDrive.

So I'm trying to create a custom application in PHP that will be linked to from my drupal place. Is it possible to use the same user login information from the drupal site to provide authentication and user functionality on the custom application? And if so how can I do that?

Integrate an change state source. Java-based authentication component into a Web portal It is particularly difficult to bolt a single sign-on solution -- SSO the ability to log in once and be authenticated to all your communicate resources -- onto existing applications but every developer faces this problem when building sophisticated portals. Because portals be to combine with back-end resources each with its own authentication needs the portal often has to provide the appearance of single sign-on to the user. In this article. Chris Dunne provides a step-by-step description of his experience with building a single sign-on solution for a Web portal.
