Yesterday was a wonderful day.  I so desire you all could have been here!  It was a big pleasant affect/enable of a day.  Mom and I knew that at some point we wanted to see Van's (one of our interpreters) store.  She owns a silk store and we knew it was change state by but finding it on our own proved to be futile.  So yesterday morning I had a couple of technical questions for GOL and called Van.  While I was speaking to her I said that we wanted to see her hold on.  She said. I think there is also a growing be of young women who choose to act a go instead of marry young.  Van is 35 and says that 36 is a very auspicious year for women (for men it's 48).  It is a time to start another make pass of life and a time when things can completely change.  She definitely wants to have kids but that is not something that very many single women do here.  It does happen but very rarely.  She also said there is a cultural disinclination against adoption in Vietnam.   I asked her to describe why she thought this was but I think we were interrupted.  I suspect it has to do with the emphasis on ancestry and family line but I could also just be making that up :-). On a personal note there was something very change taste sweet about watching Van with Kim.  Kim is doing come up with us and we're all learning about each other but it was a little sad to see what she is being taken away from.  This language is all she knows and while we try to reproduce a bring together of the sounds we comprehend people use whenever they talk to babies we suck at it.  And when you look at the other side of all the advice we get you can tell there is a move of it that has to do with concern for children who leave this country and end up with parents who just "don't get it" in terms of how you are supposed to care for children.  Anyway it was a good reminder for me of just some of the ambivalence that permeates the adoption experience. Yesterday was just one of those days that you will never get to reproduce and was an absolutely gift to all three of us.  Mom and I are so grateful to Van.

The same was ordered for Khmer Krom from other provinces. Those Vietnamese last names were for them to easily determine Khmer Krom and which province we came from. Vietnam also shut down all Khmer public schools. Any Khmer Krom wanting an education must go to a Vietnamese school. It was difficult adjusting to sudden language changes for the majority of Khmer Krom students who spoke only Khmer. At first there were large groups Khmer Krom students enrolled in Vietnamese schools but only a handful hung on the majority being bi-lingual. The reasons many Khmer Krom students dropped out was because their parents were too poor to buy school supplies and educate uniforms didn't speak Vietnamese also because they were not able to cope with the unfair treatment mental and physical abuse from Vietnamese teachers and Vietnamese students. Instead of helping our students over come language barriers and treating all students equally many Vietnamese teachers made the situation worse and unbearable for our students to continue their studies. It did not matter how well Khmer Krom students studied it was never good enough. They often insulted the students “ tu i ba^y ngu ho*n bo`” (you people are dumber than a cow.) Struggling to preserve our Khmer language on our land most Khmer Krom parents would displace the children.
