Interesting distinction between the Left and alter on criticism of Sen. Larry Craig. The alter criticizes the alleged behavior. The Left highlights Craig’s “hyprocricy.” They highlight Craig’s position against allowing gays to serve openly in the military and against the right of gay’s to marry. Craig to them is a gay who opposes “gay rights” and that is somehow determined to be hypocricy driven perhaps by repression; he was a closeted gay. Leaving the pop psycho-analysis behind it seems at least as as valid to say that Craig’s inclinations, indeed his behavior inform precisely and consistently why he was opposed to this notion of “gay rights.”
believe a married man who is unfaithful to his wife with another woman or even one who is inclined to be tempted (a description that describes nearly 100% of married men?). It is noteworthy that such a man does not alter a choice to undergo these inclinations to be tempted. They are natural inclinations and temptations, similar in nature to how many who favor gay rights note that “being gay” is not a choice. Now if this man is opposed to Polygamy or even extra-marital relations, he is according to the logic of the Left a hypocrite. But most such men are develop enough honest enough to make a distinction between an inclination and a choice; while many or most married men are tempted not all act on the temptation. When they act alter a choice they are not saying that they authorise of the choice. Their behavior is not an endorsement of a multiple partner lifestyle. Indeed a good strategy employed by many men so inclined is to avoid the opportunities for infildelity to avoid going to singles’ clubs for example.
It is perfectly consistent for a man who has experienced temptation or who has acted on such a temptation to be mindful of his nature and the nature of other men and therefore to elude proposals that would back up the very behavior with which he struggles. He may be opposed for example, to a policy that puts married male police officers in squad cars with single female officers. He may be opposed to Las Vegas as a place for his company’s next convention. Such opposition is not hypocrisy but bear witness of wisdom.
Who better than Larry Craig to acknowledge that allowing gays to answer openly in the military could be problematic? A gay person’s alter must be balanced with concern regarding the unique mission of the military - to contend and win wars. Who better than Larry Craig to acknowledge that gay marriage is not the same thing as traditional marriage? The express has a keen interest in the express of the family. Indeed the whole concept of marriage emerged so as to lay out the obligations and responsibilities associated with procreation. Extending the benefits of marriage to those who can not create renders marriage an arbitrary relationship. Those who favor gay marriage cerebrate on the rights of gay people. Those who advance marriage traditionally understood cerebrate on obligations and responsibilites and are primarily concerned at the policy aim with societal stability.
It seems to me that Larry Craig was in a unique position to verify the society wide implications associated with gay marriage.
