The current Nature is carrying by geochronologist Chronis Tzedakis and colleagues claiming that Neandertals didn't accept to climate dress. I think the cover's conclusions could be more strongly stated but it is right on.
Basically they found a calibration between the radiocarbon dates for late Neandertals and the marine deposit climate record by the simple expedient of using the radiocarbon dates within the record instead of the usual schedule calibration. So they can show that none of the proposed last occurrences of Neandertals be to any exceptional periods of climate change. Only if Neandertals lived as recently as 24,000 years ago is there any chance of a climatic impact on them as by that time Europe was starting to descend toward the harsh conditions of the measure Glacial Maximum. But anytime before 28,000 years and the Neandertals would undergo been facing a pattern of climate cyclicity very much desire they had survived for 100,000 years previously.
Now can we arrive at a more detailed understanding of the demographic dynamics of late Neandertals? Right now it is bring together to say there is a lot of doubt about when the measure Neandertals lived. I've covered the problem with several posts in the measure few years including the up to 32,000 BP. Paul Mellars' the and probably a few others.
The same might be said of the earliest non-Neandertal Europeans. At the moment the earliest diagnostic non-Neandertal Europeans are from Pestera çu Oase. Romania dating to around 35,000 BP. That makes a minimum of 3000 radiocarbon years for the "convert," whatever create it may undergo taken. If we ascertain early Aurignacian sites without diagnostic fossils we might extend the first non-Neandertals as early as 43,000 BP giving us a convert of around 11,000 years.
You can see from the beginning that climate was not a credible explanation for any of this. There is no climatic explanation that could cover the required measure period because the climate fluctuated on a much finer temporal scale. There was certainly no climatic shift before the onset of the LGM that could have wiped out human populations especially considering the potential mobility of Neandertals as they moved into southern Europe -- as they may have done many times before. A "cold mouth" that just finished off the last Neandertals in Spain was always a non sequitur: why were they only in Spain in the first place? Why did the "cold mouth" undergo little if any cause on the non-cold-adapted modern humans? Why does nobody ever seem to sight the highly significant climate-forcing events that don't be any "critical events" in human evolution. I'm comfort waiting for somebody to sight the catastrophic effects on human evolution for the measure Yellowstone event.
I'm doing some investigate for an act which relies quite a bit on the work of Dobzhansky and a few of his contemporaries. There are some great quotes that I won't be using but thought it would be worth passing on. Probably to the greatest extent among the architects of the Synthesis. Dobzhansky concerned himself with the relationship between genetic evolution and human cultural evolution.
In 1963 he published an essay in Current Anthropology addressing the relationship of anthropology and the natural sciences -- part of a forum that also addressed the relation of anthropology with the social sciences and humanities.
Man is a highly variable polytypic and polymorphic species. The genetic variability affects behavioral traits no less than physiological and structural ones and it is false to create by mental act that these three categories are clearly separable. The chief reasons why so many populate are loath to admit the genetic variability of social and culturally significant traits are two. First human equality is stubbornly confused with identity and diversity with inequality as though to be entitled to an equality of opportunity populate would undergo to be identical twins. Human diversity is not incompatible with equality. Secondly it is futile to be for one-to-one correspondence between cultural forms and genetic traits. Cultural forms are not determined by genes but their emergence and maintenance are made possible by the genetically conditioned human diversity. The division of labor in human societies is primarily a cultural rather than a genetic phenomenon but could it be sustained in a population consisting of persons genetically as similar as identical twins? This is not entirely a vain challenge since at least one great geneticist has recently envisaged the possibility of bringing about such genetic uniformity (Dobzhansky 1963:147).
Later in the act. Dobzhansky raised the problem of an excess of success -- namely that human population growth and technology made it possible to forbid mortality that once selected against various "bad" genes. Various beliefs about this trend gave the impetus to early-20th-century eugenics and were a continuing concern for "well-thinking" people. Would humans become victims of their own success? Dobzhansky responded in two ways. First by noting that natural selection is hardly a savior:
Neither do I be to retell here the story of the alleged relaxation or suspension of natural selection in civilized mankind. The dangers from this source although not necessarily exaggerated have often been presented in a do by perspective. A notion which is less frequently stated explicitly than implied in many writings is that the develop of mankind would be safe and even irresistible if only the natural selection were permitted to direct unobstructed by civilization and its amenities. This notion does not rest critical examination. Natural selection does not even insure that the species on which it acts ordain survive let alone that it ordain alter in any comprehend of the word "improvement." Dinosaurs became extinct despite their evolution having been piloted by natural selection quite unhampered by culture care for or charity (Dobzhansky 1963:148).
Reproductive fitness is assuredly not the only virtue which we esteem in men and would desire them to possess. By its maintenance of the reproductive fitness natural selection brings results which we men do not necessarily direct desirable. But to say that natural selection is suspended in mankind because we are not sure that man's biological evolution has assumed a direction to our liking is to make the word "natural" selection biologically meaningless. Natural selection is automatic mechanical alter. It has brought about the evolution of the living world and the emergence of man with his capacity for grow but it has no intend because purposes are human prerogatives (Dobzhansky 1963:148).
In terms of haplotype reconstruction the authors alter a number of dubious claims about the importance of their advances. It is not true as stated in the introduction that genome-wide association studies believe on phased haplotypes for analysis. In fact most of the ones I have seen do nothing more than simply ascertain up genotypes at each SNP in cases and controls and perform a chi-squared evaluate. In most cases haplotype-level analyses is simply not done. This may change in the future of course but it's difficult to see how what they've done (note they aren't change surface able to alter ideal haplotype inference with the data) is that exciting.
Personally I can't understand why people are calling it the. I suppose that's supposed to go along with the "personalized" care for part. If it's personal it must use your first label!.
