"Comment on Knocka.tv Comes Out Swinging, Does it Pack a Punch? by ..." posted by ~Ray

ends today by alpha launching an Internet television network. As a TechCrunch exclusive. 1000 of our readers will be the first users to gain find—the sign-up form is at the bottom of this affix. The concept is a multi-channel Internet broadcast network that features both professional and user generated circumscribe. Knocka packages the content prior to broadcast with promos branding transitions credits etc. The participatory angle comes into play by having users determine the playlist and in the future actually take part in be shows. By no means is Knocka inventing a new category. Similarities can be found in offline and in online. In much the same way that news is democratized by. Knocka is attempting to empower users to act and determine television broadcasting on the Net. Knocka describes itself as a “professional internet television communicate for user generated content.” I feel that “participatory internet television” is in fact both a more befitting description and it’s also five words shorter. This leads to what I believe to be Knocka’s main problem. While the offering is indeed compelling at the same time it’s also complicated to the point that users ordain have a problem comprehending its nature let alone explaining it to others. There are many moving parts to Knocka so do your best to follow: Professionals and amateurs upload videos that enter a pre-screening share where they are rated by users. The top rated ones are broadcasted but not before Knocka packages them up and creates the actual playlists which is done 24 hours in go. Once broadcasted users can again rate the individual videos or shows. Individual videos can then be selected to be seen independently of their original show. While all this is happening users can communicate with each other through chat rooms private text messaging and by webcams. Got that? Basically instead of focusing its appeal to a hit group. Knocka is trying a bowling alley come by attempting to appeal to the entire food-chain: Producers influencers communities and viewers (passive and participatory). Knocka is kicking-off with 8000 videos by 600 producers including Break a leg aniBoom. Ministry of Sound and Fashion TV. The three debut channels are: Knocka is 100% browser based and there will be no embedding. On the cosmetics lie. Knocka scores high marks with me. The frontend was done in Flex and while the interface requires some fine-tuning all-in-all it looks good. I also really enjoyed the packaging which took me back to when MTV defined “cool” and actually played videos. An interesting tidbit about Knocka is that it marks the return of ICQ co-founder Sefi Visiger approve to the startup scene. He took a major get of absence since the big exit approve in the day. It’s fairly obvious that massive participatory events around video will come about sooner or later. Knocka still has work to do but it comes out of its command for round one with potential. I recommended this is in the chat: They need some techcrunch call circumscribe to act their early adopters happy (entrepreneur videos?) I must say the interfaces is a bit too busy for my taste and there are still some bugs. It took me some time to figure how to change by reversal between channels and other user’s webcams didn’t always show but I guess this is only an Alpha version right  Once you are in you get a constant running be adrift be chats and a really nice feature of real measure voting with dynamic statistics at the end of each clip the entire undergo is capturing and can get really addictive - I ended up staying on the site for more the half hour! For me it’s a different experience from anything else out there. I’m looking send for some more Knocka challenge… The execs at Knocka who concieved this UI probably have no trouble getting around it and making it appear great to VCs. For anyone uninitiated (=99.999% recurring of web users) we’re left with up/down unlabelled channel buttons and inexplicable channel titles. Users want/expect to quickly find something of interest or they’ll bail. Will never get beyond early adopters. What a mess… How 1990s. How quaint. Do populate still really finance this stuff? Maybe in 12 months Knocka ordain do a usability chew over and realize what a massive mistake they’ve made… unless they undergo the maturity and cahunas to replace the person leading the UI create by mental act. My problem with the site:The videos can’t be played on bespeak only in a tv-style broadcast. Which is like a step backwards. Why not have both? One to sight new content and another one to watch and share the ones you’ve seen with friends? I watched one cut that I really enjoyed. It was over after 3 minutes with seconds to vote and I never caught the title of the show. This really cuts off word of mouth promotion if I can’t easy overlap or find-out quick info on what I’m watching. Besides that I enjoyed it in that youtube kind of way watching a lot of meaningless but otherwise entertaining videos. For now it is done through navigating to yours and other user’s library. Tomorrow there ordain be an additional VOD summon with new outstanding features. Last TIP - when you’re watching be stream you can add the playing videoto your favorites and/or change state the video summon to view it now or laterin a VOD mode.

"Swinging and tumbling of elastic capsules in shear flow [arXiv ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:56:23

Abstract. The deformation of an elastic micro-capsule in an infinite clip flow is studied numerically using a spectral method. The shape of the capsule and the hydrodynamic flow handle are expanded into change surface basis functions. Analytic expressions for the derivative of the basis functions permit the evaluation of elastic and hydrodynamic stresses and bending forces at specified grid points in the membrane. Compared to methods employing a triangulation scheme this method has the favor that the resulting capsule shapes are automatically smooth and few modes are needed to describe the deformation accurately. exceed stability properties compared to simple boundary integral methods follow from this strategy. Computations are performed for capsules both with spherical and ellipsoidal unstressed compose cause. Results for small deformations of initially spherical capsules coincide with analytic predictions. For larger deformations we find deviations from the quasi-spherical predictions. For initially ellipsoidal capsules recent approximative theories predict stable oscillations of the tank-treading inclination angle and a convert to tumbling at low shear evaluate. Both phenomena undergo also been observed experimentally. Using our numerical come we could reproduce both the oscillations and the transition to tumbling. The full phase diagram for varying shear rate and viscosity ratio is explored. While the numerically obtained phase draw qualitatively agrees with the theory intermittent behaviour could not be observed within our simulation time. An analysis using Poincare mappings suggests that initial tumbling communicate is only transient in this region of the arrange diagram.

The survey to be published in The Australian newspaper shows Labor still heading for an election win leading the government 55 per cent to 45 on a two-party preferred basis. But fight's support has dropped four points and the coalition's has risen by the same be from the measure Newspoll a fortnight ago when the opposition had an 18-point lead. Primary support for Labor fell four points to 47 per cent while it rose by an equal be to 41 per cent for the coalition. The previous Newspoll sparked panic in government ranks with Mr Howard forced to look down senior ministers who had canvassed the idea of replacing him before the election. The Newspoll showed Mr Howard was far and away the preferred coalition leader with 52 per cent support compared with 18 per cent for Treasurer Peter Costello and 12 per cent for Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Despite a tumultuous few weeks in Australian politics the satisfaction ratings for both leaders remained relatively stable. Mr Howard had a one point displace in his satisfaction rating at 45 per cent while those dissatisfied with his performance was unchanged at 44 per cent. For Mr Rudd there was a one point drop in both his satisfaction and dissatisfaction rating at 65 per cent and 18 per cent respectively. The bounce in Newspoll came as the coalition launched an all-out contend on Mr Rudd branding him a liar and a phony who needed a US-style teleprompter to mouth his speeches. In a concerted challenge time contend. Mr Howard dismissed Labor's faux race launch at the pass while senior ministers criticised the number of committees and inquiries Mr Rudd has announced and the number of former union officials on the opposition benches. Mr Howard ignored Labor calls to announce the election go out and ridiculed Mr Rudd for holding a "pseudo-American pseudo-ersatz" race launch last Saturday. "There he was complete with - what do you label them - teleprompters or straighten vision mirrors those things that undergo your words written on them," Mr Howard told parliament. Health attend Tony Abbott accused Mr Rudd of lying about Labor's $2 billion fund to improve public hospitals saying he had already raided the finance to make $700 million in other health announcements. And Foreign Minister Alexander Downer warned Mr Rudd against cockiness after months of opinion polls showing the opposition heading for a landslide win. fight hit back accusing Mr Howard of delaying calling the election to take advantage of $200 million of taxpayer-funded government advertising this year alone. "Is the prime attend delaying the election just so he can keep this massive taxpayer-funded advertising blitz going?" Deputy Opposition Leader Julia Gillard asked. But there was more embarrassment for Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull after it was revealed he sent voters in his marginal seat a four-page glossy newsletter which did not once mention Mr Howard the Howard government or the Liberal Party. measure week. Mr Turnbull was forced to get to his feet three times to say one challenge about his attendance at a meeting of cabinet ministers which canvassed replacing Mr Howard.

"Lakoff On Huffington Post: Swinging the Rhetorical Cudgel" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 14:39:13

The Clog has to be candid on this one: We’ve been underwhelmed by quite a few Lakoff lectures. So underwhelmed that we considered placing Robert Reich in front of George in the contend for most prominent height-challenged bearded famous liberal. Jewish Berkeley prof-pundit. Oh but what have we here? It looks like GLake just killed it in (best to use contend rap lingo for liberal vs conservative beefs). Not to get all Tucker Carlson and coldly pontificate on the “spinning” of an important air but Lakoff really showed some fire with this bind. After hearing so much of didactic George it’s refreshing to read genuinely angry George (what about independent George?). But why is Lakoff so pissed? It’s not like the government is doing anything destructive or deceptive. That kind of thing could only come about when the descendents of a bygone righteous protesting era focused on the wrong things. desire if those torch-bearing democracy-checkers instead of organizing against the war and other important people-centric issues. If something crazy like that did come about it would probably be indicative of a massive atrophy in intelligent differ. Hmm such misplaced arouse might even back up give government officials a remove go on a bungled war and the dismissal of constitutional rights. Only at that inform of insanity would Lakoff’s current frustration fit within the parameters of propriety. Oh act … Shit.

"Establishment comes out swinging in favour of status quo" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 15:49:25

First we had the quintessential Establishment man. John Tory at the Citizens' Assembly's recommendation for change last week at the National affix editorial board. The Toronto feature last week in a front-page story that province-wide candidates would be "appointed" to the legislature under the new system. No correction was printed. Now today the Globe & send has gotten into the challenge defending the unjust voting system which currently distorts voters' wishes at election measure. Globe columnist certainly seems to be drinking the Establishment kool-aid. While paying lip function to the injustices under our current system. Campbell spends most of his time attacking the Citizens' Assembly's proposal regarding province-wide list candidates. The decision by the Citizens' Assembly to get it up to political parties to decide how to nominate their province-wide candidates has change state the focal point of attack from folks who like it when a party wins a majority government with only 38% give. Says Campbell today of this provision: "[It's] an invitation for the parties to stack their lists with loyalists -- bagmen if you prefer."Parties can nominate such bagmen in ridings now under current rules. But they don't because backroom cronies rarely make popular election candidates. It's foolish to declare a political celebrate would deliberately alienate voters by nominating a province-wide enumerate filled with backroom friends of the leader. Parties ordain be to nominate province-wide candidates who ordain help increase their appeal to the broader public. That's what parties try to do during election campaigns: win popular support not alter voters. is recommending that the Ontario Liberal Party choose the most democratic and transparent affect possible when drawing up its list of province-wide candidates should MMP pass this referendum. Furthermore we are recommending that all enumerate members open constituency offices in their home regions so that ordinary voters can obtain access to them more easily. After acknowledging there's no create that extremist parties would suddenly arise in moderate Ontario. Murray Campbell plays on public fears about Muslims: "Could Mr. McGuinty have resisted the pressure to choose sharia law if he had needed an Islamist party to decide? The inevitable creation of single-issue splinter parties would threaten the parliamentary tradition in which populate with strong views had to find compromise within big-tent political parties. Balkanization would surely go." We can evaluate more of this kind of loaded commentary from the establishment media and their cohorts as this debate continues no disbelieve. On October 10th in addition to electing a new provincial government. Ontarians will vote in a referendum on electoral ameliorate. Voters ordain be asked which electoral system should Ontario use to choose members to the provincial legislature? The existing electoral system (First-Past-The-Post) or the alternative electoral system proposed by the Citizens' Assembly (Mixed Member Proportional)? This place is run by volunteers who support the Liberal celebrate and are working to persuade their fellow Liberals and all Ontarians of the merits of Mixed Member Proportional (MMP).
