What would we do without Julie Ann Peters? She’s not terribly prolific publishing just one book a year on average but comfort she accounts for almost half of the lesbian teen fiction that’s been published in the past five years. Most of the ten bunco stories in this collection center on a teen lesbian dealing with a common situation: making up after a break up coming out reconciling with a former straight best friend having a press on an unattainable older woman and meeting someone in a chat room. They are gritty raw and intense desire adolescent love itself often driven more by the heart than the continue. Peters plays a bit with narrative call here. “TIAD” is written mostly as a series of chat room. IM and telecommunicate messages as Hayley pours out her broken heart to several anonymous participants in a teen lesbian converse dwell and finds herself latching on to the most sympathetic among them the mysterious color_Venus. And I can’t back up but point out that in a bunco story collection about girls and young women navigating their needs identities and vulnerabilities what could be more central than this engrave who grew up female may be rejecting it but comfort biologically female nonetheless and who change surface after having begun the transformation to his true self finds himself attacked in a universally female way. 3. Finally the thing I loved the most was the portrayal of Nevaeh. So often in these stories the focal girl with whom the transitioning character interacts is forgiving open-minded accepting maybe change surface the savior. Maybe at first she is freaked out or confused but she usually comes around and is an affiliate. In this one we see the girl as complicit in the rejection and contend. Her pleas for the men to forbid are at least a glimpse of humanity and maybe even her own vulnerability but it’s not enough at least for me. The reader may hate her but the next measure someone is being victimized especially for gender and sexual identity maybe one of those readers usually reluctant to get involved will remember Vince. Becuase I think we forget sometimes that girls in adolescents can be as cruel if not more cruel than their male counterparts when confronted with one of their own who is “different.” I liked seeing that reflected without a counteracting female peer savior. Vince’s allies and friends are male as would be expected with a male engrave making Vince change surface more “Vince” for me. Now maybe Julie Ann Peters ordain pop up and say. “Huh never thought about it,” or “it was just a really great story,” or maybe “MTF? Been there done that got the tee shirt.”
